The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice has a Temporary Staff Attorney position for a one-year term available in the Bronx Neighborhood Office's Foreclosure Prevention and Homeownership Preservation Unit. The role involves defensively representing homeowners in foreclosure and related actions and proactively addressing lending, real estate, and estate abuses to prevent loss of home, equity, and homelessness. The unit is staffed by a supervising attorney, four staff attorneys, one paralegal, and collaborates closely with the Queens Neighborhood Office's comparable unit, city, and statewide advocates on policy and outreach.Essential Duties / ResponsibilitiesRepresent clients in state and federal court proceedings, affirmatively and defensively, regarding foreclosure, civil rights, consumer protection, estates administration, quiet title, and partition actions.Advocate with lenders at settlement conferences and other forums to secure loss mitigation or other home‑preserving solutions.Conduct client intake, including offsite, in‑person, and occasional evening or weekend sessions.Train, conduct community outreach, and provide education for individuals, community‑based organizations, and housing advocates.Advocate with local, state, and federal agencies on behalf of clients.Participate in coalition meetings and advocacy; collaborate with partner groups, occasionally traveling in New York State (approximately 3–4 times annually).Advocate for legislative reforms and policy changes, including continued funding for HOPP.Work with pro bono lawyers and partner organizations.Represent the Civil Practice and LAS in the community and promote the work of the unit and practice.Complete administrative tasks as assigned, such as grant reporting.Participate in continuous professional development.Continuously learn about bias in the workplace and demonstrate inclusive behaviors that support an inclusive work environment.Perform other duties as assigned.QualificationsRequired QualificationsJuris Doctor and three years of required experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.New York State Bar admission or awaiting NYS Bar admission after sitting for the NYS Bar exam.At least three years working with homeowners to preserve their homes and/or protect their equity preferred.Excellent written and oral advocacy skills.Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and civil legal services.A passion for economic justice.Preferred QualificationsProficiency in languages other than English desirable, but not required.Demonstrated knowledge of mortgage, property, and related laws and regulations preferred.Knowledge of trust and estates issues preferred.Litigation skills and experience preferred.Ability to work independently as well as part of a team and manage a high volume of cases.Ability to coordinate and collaborate successfully with other groups and organizations.Salary and BenefitsSalary range: $86,520 – $157,075 .
