Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Temporary Research Assistant for the Brain Health Institute within Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS).

The primary purpose of the Temporary Research Assistant is to assist with behavioral neuroscience research in a preclinical laboratory investigating the brain circuitry underlying eating, motivational, and substance use disorders in small rodents. Under supervision, helps carry out behavioral experiments, immunohistochemistry and microscopy, and routine data collection and recordkeeping. Conducts behavioral experiments to study brain addiction circuity in small rodents.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Assists with behavioral experiments in rodents, including operant conditioning and standard behavioral tests, to help evaluate novel compounds for conditions such as binge eating disorder and substance use disorder.
  • Assists with drug and food self-administration studies and related operant behavior testing in rodents.
  • Carries out immunohistochemistry and fluorescent labeling of brain tissue.
  • Assists in preparing reagents, stains, and stock solutions.
  • Performs standard laboratory procedures involved in making required tests and analyses.
  • Supports data collection, entry, and analysis, and helps prepare figures for presentations.
  • Assists with microscopy and basic anatomical analysis of brain tissue.
  • Maintains accurate records of experimentation and research and helps prepare reports and databases.
  • Orders supplies for the laboratory and assists with laboratory maintenance.

FLSA Nonexempt Grade 99H Salary Details $22 per hour Minimum Salary 15.92 Mid Range Salary 75.00 Maximum Salary 150.00 Offer Information

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Requires an associate degree or bachelor's degree in a scientific or technical discipline (such as neuroscience, cell biology, biology, public health, psychology, or bioengineering), or an equivalent combination of education and relevant laboratory or research-study knowledge.

Certifications/Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with behavioral tests in rodents, immunohistochemistry and microscopy, research data analysis, and scientific writing is preferred

Equipment Utilized Physical Demands and Work Environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. Must be able to lift or excel force up to ten (25) pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Moderate noise environment.
