Position Overview

The following is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. This list of duties is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all the functions and responsibilities performed.

Note: This position is funded through an external grant. Continued employment is contingent upon funding availability and program needs. Appointments are part-time and may vary based on enrollment and instructional demand.

Position Summary:

The Part-Time Adult Education Instructor is responsible for organizing, managing, and delivering instruction for High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation and English Language Acquisition (ELA) classes. Instruction may take place at various public locations and during daytime and evening hours, based on program needs and assignment. The instructor supports the Director and Assistant Director of Adult Education by assisting with program oversight, ensuring compliance with state and federal guidelines, and supporting special-topic instructional initiatives. This position reports to the Director, Adult Education.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

May occasionally provide limited supervision or guidance to student workers or support staff to assist with program operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide instructional services to adult learners (ages 16 and older) using program-approved curricula and instructional materials.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans using a variety of instructional strategies, including lectures, individualized instruction, discussion, project-based learning, computer-assisted instruction, and student-led activities.
  • Utilize ongoing formative and summative assessments and counsel students regarding academic progress and goal attainment.
  • Assist with student registration, orientation, goal setting, and persistence strategies.
  • Maintain accurate student records, including registration, attendance, assessment data, and progress reports, and submit data on time for the National Reporting System (NRS).
  • Establish and maintain effective classroom management practices that enhance learning and engagement.
  • Create a classroom environment that is supportive, inclusive, and tailored to adult learners' maturity, interests, and diverse ability levels.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and partners both orally and in writing, using correct grammar and professional standards.
  • Maintain professional and instructional competence through participation in required staff meetings, trainings, and professional development activities.
  • Serve as a liaison to other university departments regarding Adult Education inquiries.
  • Become familiar with community resources, tutoring services, and career resources, and regularly share relevant information with students.
  • Follow and apply all university, state, and federal policies and procedures.
  • Plan instruction for multi-level classrooms that prepares students for High School Equivalency testing and/or improves foundational academic and language skills.
  • Individualize instruction to meet the needs of learners with varied skill levels.
  • Apply principles of adult learning theory (andragogy) to design instruction that is relevant, learner-centered, and aligned with adult learners' goals and experiences.
  • Assist with departmental or program-related functions as needed.
  • Assist with Adult Education office functions as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Associate degree or two (2) years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of High School Equivalency (HSE) subject areas and/or English Language Acquisition (ELA).
  • Familiarity with English language learners and High School Equivalency diploma pathways.

Preferred:

  • Two (2) years of experience teaching adult learners.
  • TESOL endorsement or equivalent.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and high workloads effectively.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and skill development.
  • Knowledge of adult education principles and instructional practices.
  • Computer literacy, including proficiency with Google Workspace applications.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to build trust and foster effective working relationships.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply policies, procedures, and instructional guidelines.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and respond calmly and effectively in varied situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze student assessment data to identify learning needs and guide instructional decisions.
  • Knowledge of scheduling and attendance systems, including those supported by Google Workspace tools.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
  • The employee frequently needs to stand, walk, and sit, and may occasionally need to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • Specific vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and the ability to adjust focus.

Paid Time Off

Leave accrual rates are determined by employee class (At-Will/Professional & Faculty - exempt or Support - non-exempt) and years of employment. See below for specific accruals for each employee class.

As per policies and procedures Adjuncts and Temporary employees are not eligible to accrue leave.

Faculty Paid Time Off

  • Medical leave is accrued 48 hours in the Fall and 48 hours in the Spring.
  • Personal Leave - Five personal work days each academic year and two work days during the summer. Only regular faculty will be eligible for personal leave. Personal leave will not accumulate from academic year to academic year.

Support Paid Time Off

  • During the first year of service, full time non-exempt (hourly) employees accrue 7 hours of annual leave and 7 hours of medical leave per month.
  • The second year of service, full time non-exempt employees accrue 10 hours of annual leave and 10 hours of medical leave per month.
  • The third and subsequent years of service, full time non-exempt employees accrue 14.66 hours of annual leave and 14 hours of medical leave per month.
  • Employees must work for the University for three months before they are eligible to use annual leave.
  • Leave accruals will be pro-rated for part time employees.

Professional/ At-will Paid Time Off

  • Full time exempt employees accrue 14.66 hours of annual leave and 14 hours of medical leave per month.
  • Employees must work for the University for three months before they are eligible to use annual leave.
  • Leave accruals will be pro-rated for part time employees.

Employee Educational Assistance Plan

Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell offers a tuition waiver for permanent, full-time and part-time regular employees and retirees. Employees can take up to 9 credit hours on the Roswell campus. Their IRS dependents are not restricted in the number of credit hours they can take. For detailed information reference 40.9 Educational Assistance Program.

For classes offered by ENMU in Portales, the Portales campus will waive some tuition for either the employee or spouse, dependents, as defined by the I.R.S., are not eligible for tuition waivers for classes taken through the Portales campus.

Additional course fees will still need to be paid by the employee.

As per policies and procedures Adjuncts and Temporary employees are not eligible to recieve the tutiion wavier.
