Position Summary Information Nature of position: Temporary part-time Posting Detail Information Job Summary Basic Function: Join Our Team at Millersville University The Department of Physics is accepting applications for Temporary Part-time Instructors to teach assigned undergraduate physics lecture and/or laboratory courses and fulfilling related professional responsibilities. Course preparation, assessment, grading, and student support are included in the duties.

Duties include:

  • Teaching face-to-face and/or online classes, days, evenings, or weekends as scheduled
  • Being available to students by holding appropriate office hours
  • In addition to teaching, there is an expectation for scholarship and service commensurate with the assignment

The purpose of this posting is to generate a pool of qualified faculty. Applications submitted will be reviewed on an as-needed basis based on enrollment. Anyone meeting the qualifications may be contacted for an interview and potentially hired when a need exists. In the event that you are interviewed but not immediately hired, your application will remain in the departments pool of qualified faculty.

Duties and Responsibilities Teach assigned undergraduate physics courses, lecture and/or lab, as scheduled by the department. Prepare and deliver instruction, assess student learning, hold office hours, and submit grades in accordance with University policies. Courses may include algebra-based or calculus-based introductory physics, astronomy, and associated laboratories as needed.

Part-time faculty members shall maintain a prorated number of office hours each week at a minimum of twenty-five (25) minutes for each workload hour taught at such days, times, and locations as will accommodate the needs of the students. This position requires in-person instruction on Millersville Universitys campus, lecture and/or laboratory, and may include limited online components as assigned. This position is contingent upon sufficient enrollments in assigned classes. Continuing Scholarly Growth and Professional Development and Service to the University and/or Community In addition to teaching, there is an expectation for scholarship and service commensurate with the assignment. Other reasonable duties assigned within the faculty members field of competence.

Department Description The Department of Physics at Millersville University offers a Bachelor of Science in Physics and provides essential physics coursework for students across multiple STEM majors. The department emphasizes high-quality teaching, hands-on laboratory experiences, undergraduate research, and inclusive student support in a collaborative learning environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Physics or a closely related discipline
  • Ability to teach undergraduate physics lecture and/or laboratory courses
  • Familiarity with standard instructional laboratory equipment and safe laboratory practices
  • Ability to use learning-management systems and instructional technology as needed
  • Evidence of ability to successfully teach diverse student populations
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills
  • Commitment to inclusive teaching practices and working with diverse student populations
  • Successful interview
  • Successful teaching demonstration for classroom teaching assignments
  • Successful completion of three background checks

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD, ABD, or terminal degree in Physics or a closely related discipline
  • Prior teaching experience in undergraduate physics lecture and/or lab, including experience with active learning strategies and/or instructional laboratories
  • Prior college-level teaching experience

Teach courses face-to-face and online if necessary at the higher education level using lectures, demonstrations, class discussion, and appropriate instructional technology and equipment. Able to record and calculate grades, prepare course outline and syllabus, develop course and lesson plans, engage in the selection of appropriate textbooks and other teaching aids necessary to the delivery of instruction. Use computer for email, obtain information on websites, prepare class documents, grade papers, submit final grades online, and other duties related to teaching and advising students and serving the department, college, university, and community. No or very limited exposure to physical risks. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and mouse.
