    Job Description

    Job Description

This is primarily a hands-on field-service position. The ideal candidate enjoys troubleshooting problems, working independently at customer locations, and figuring out why a telephone or communications system isn't working. The position also includes in-office support, including taking customer trouble calls and troubleshooting issues over the phone.

This is not primarily a cable-installation position.

We are looking for someone who understands traditional telephone wiring and telecommunications infrastructure and is comfortable working with modern VoIP and network-connected telephone equipment.

Leadership skills are a bonus and could lead to supervisory responsibilities.

    What You'll Do:

    Field Service & Troubleshooting

    • Respond to service calls at commercial customer locations throughout the Chicago area.
    • Take trouble calls in the office, troubleshoot and diagnose issues over the phone, and perform on-site work—a balance of on-site and in-office support.
    • Diagnose and repair telephone, data networking, and low-voltage communication problems.
    • Troubleshoot analog telephone/POTS circuits and VoIP systems.
    • Trace, identify, test, and repair telephone wiring.
    • Work with telephone pairs, blocks, jacks, cross-connects, and building wiring.
    • Troubleshoot problems between the customer's telephone equipment and the carrier/service provider.
    • Identify whether a problem is related to wiring, equipment, configuration, or the service provider.
    • Perform installations, moves, adds, and changes of telephone equipment and wiring.
    • Work independently at customer locations and communicate professionally with building personnel and customers.

    Building Telecommunications Infrastructure

    • Work in MDF and IDF rooms.
    • Trace telephone and data cabling.
    • Terminate and repair low-voltage wiring.
    • Install and troubleshoot telephone jacks and related equipment.
    • Work with Cat 3, Cat 5e, and Cat 6 cabling.
    • Perform cable testing and troubleshooting.
    • Maintain accurate documentation of wiring and service work.

    Specialized Telecommunications

Experience with any of the following is highly desirable:

    • PBX systems
    • VoIP
    • SIP
    • Analog/POTS replacement
    • ATA devices
    • Elevator telephone lines
    • Fire-panel telephone communications
    • Cellular/Internet-based POTS replacement

    • Strong understanding of telephone wiring and troubleshooting
    • Ability to trace and identify telephone pairs
    • Experience working in commercial buildings
    • Familiarity with MDFs and IDFs
    • Ability to troubleshoot wiring using appropriate test equipment
    • Ability to diagnose problems independently
    • Good verbal and written communication skills
    • Professional appearance and customer-service skills
    • Valid driver's license
    • Reliable transportation
    • Comfortable working independently in the field
    • Ability to use an iPhone/iPad for work orders, photographs, and documentation

    • Previous experience providing telecommunications service to apartment/condominium buildings, commercial properties, or HOAs
    • Supervisory experience
