Technical Writer Electrical Utility Projects
Location: Reno, NV
Schedule: Full-Time, Onsite
Duration: 12+ Months

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Technical Writer to support electrical utility capital and operational projects. The Technical Writer will develop, maintain, and improve project documentation, procedures, reports, presentations, and communication materials.

This role will work closely with Project Managers, Project Controllers, Engineers, Construction Managers, Planners, Regulatory Teams, Operations, and Executive Stakeholders to translate complex technical and project information into clear, accurate, and user-friendly documentation.

The ideal candidate will have strong technical writing and editing skills, experience supporting project management or engineering teams, and familiarity with utility, construction, infrastructure, or other regulated-industry projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain project management policies, procedures, manuals, reports, white papers, presentations, and other technical documentation.

  • Translate complex technical and project information into clear, concise, and easy-to-understand content.

  • Work with subject matter experts to gather technical information, clarify requirements, and ensure documentation accuracy.

  • Participate in project meetings and interviews to understand project requirements and documentation needs.

  • Coordinate requests for project documentation, records, and supporting evidence.

  • Maintain document control, version control, and document management standards.

  • Identify opportunities to improve documentation processes, consistency, and efficiency.

  • Support implementation and continuous improvement of PMO methodologies, processes, and best practices.

  • Create and maintain spreadsheets to compile, organize, analyze, and present large sets of project data.

  • Support project governance, compliance, and knowledge management initiatives.

  • Ensure documentation complies with applicable company policies, procedures, codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, Communications, English, Business Administration, Engineering Technology, Project Management, or a related field.

  • 3 7 years of experience in technical writing, project documentation, project controls, or a related field.

  • Strong technical writing, editing, proofreading, and document formatting skills.

  • Strong understanding of project management principles and project lifecycle processes.

  • Experience creating professional reports, procedures, presentations, manuals, and other business documentation.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills with excellent attention to detail.

  • Ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Teams.

  • Experience with document management and collaboration systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting utility, engineering, construction, infrastructure, or capital projects.

  • Experience working in a regulated industry.

  • Familiarity with transmission, distribution, substation, generation, or grid modernization projects.

  • Experience working within a PMO or project controls environment.

  • Familiarity with project management and scheduling tools such as:

    • Primavera P6

    • Oracle Unifier

    • Power BI

    • Maximo

Work Environment

This is a full-time onsite position supporting electrical utility projects. The role requires regular interaction with project managers, engineers, project controls teams, construction personnel, and other business stakeholders.

Shift: Full-Time / Standard Business Hours
