About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Technical Writer to own the documentation ecosystem for our
Augmented Reality (AR) Data Collection operations. In this role, you will serve as the critical
bridge between our engineering/research teams and the operational workforce collecting
high-fidelity data in the field and lab environments.
You will not just "write" documentation; you will design the information architecture that ensures
safety, data integrity, and operational efficiency. You will document complex hardware setup
procedures, rigorous data capture protocols, and troubleshooting guides for next-generation AR
devices.
Key Responsibilities
Create Operational SOPs: Author, edit, and maintain detailed Standard Operating
Procedures (SOPs) for data collection pilots and large-scale studies. These documents
must ensure 100% protocol adherence by non-technical operators.
Hardware Documentation: Produce clear, visual-heavy guides for the setup,
calibration, hygiene, and maintenance of proprietary AR headsets, sensors, and motion
capture rigs.
Translate Engineering Requirements: Collaborate with Research Scientists, Hardware
Engineers, and Program Managers to distill complex technical requirements into
user-friendly instructions for the operations team.
Quality Assurance & Feedback Loops: Observe data collection sessions (in-lab or via
video) to validate the effectiveness of your documentation. iterate rapidly based on
operator confusion or data quality feedback.
Safety Protocols: Work with EHS (Environment, Health, and Safety) teams to
document safety guidelines for users navigating physical spaces while wearing
immersive hardware.
Information Architecture: Manage the knowledge base (e.g., Confluence, internal
Wikis), ensuring version control and easy access for a distributed workforce.
Multimedia Content: Create or coordinate the creation of instructional assets, including
diagrams, flowcharts, and short video tutorials to supplement written text.
Required Qualifications
Experience: 5+ years of experience as a Technical Writer, with at least 2 years focused
on Hardware, Manufacturing, Operations, or AR/VR technologies.
Portfolio: A strong portfolio demonstrating your ability to write procedural documentation
(SOPs), hardware user guides, or troubleshooting manuals. Please include samples of
"Step-by-Step" instructions.
Technical Aptitude: Demonstrated ability to quickly learn proprietary hardware and
software tools. You must be comfortable troubleshooting basic technical issues to
document them accurately.
Visual Communication: Proficiency in capturing and editing screenshots/photos and
creating diagrams (using tools like Snagit, Photoshop, Lucidchart, or Visio) to explain
physical actions.
Tools: Expert-level proficiency in documentation platforms such as Confluence, Google
Workspace, or specialized CMS tools (MadCap Flare, etc.).
Adaptability: Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment where hardware and
software specifications change rapidly.
Preferred Qualifications
Domain Knowledge: Previous experience specifically with Augmented Reality,
Computer Vision, or Machine Learning data pipelines.
Video Production: Ability to film and edit short instructional videos (Premiere Pro,
Camtasia) for training purposes.
UX Writing: Experience writing on-device UI/UX copy or error messages for the data
collection software.
Training Experience: Background in instructional design or delivering training sessions
to operational staff.
Core Competencies
Audience Empathy: The ability to write for a non-technical audience (data collectors)
without losing the technical nuance required by engineers.
Attention to Detail: In data collection, a missed step means corrupted data. You must
be meticulous.
Proactive Communication: The confidence to chase down Subject Matter Experts
(SMEs) and extract the necessary information
