Our client, a software development company based in Austin, is hiring a part-time Technical Writer to support their growing product documentation needs. This role is approximately 20–25 hours per week and follows a hybrid schedule, with some in-office collaboration required at their downtown Austin location.

The Technical Writer will be responsible for producing user guides, API documentation, release notes, and internal knowledge base articles. You will work closely with product managers, engineers, and QA teams to translate technical concepts into clear, accurate content for both technical and non-technical audiences.

This is a well-suited opportunity for an experienced writer who values flexibility and wants to contribute meaningfully without a full-time commitment. The team uses modern documentation tooling and follows a structured review process, so strong organizational habits and attention to detail are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Write and maintain user-facing documentation including guides, tutorials, and FAQs
  • Develop API reference documentation in collaboration with engineering teams
  • Create and update internal knowledge base articles and SOPs
  • Edit content for clarity, consistency, and adherence to the company style guide
  • Participate in sprint reviews and product demos to stay current on feature releases
  • Manage multiple documentation projects simultaneously within defined deadlines
  • Coordinate with subject matter experts to gather technical information accurately
  • Publish finalized documentation through the company's content management system

Requirements

  • 5 or more years of experience in technical writing, preferably in a software or SaaS environment
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear documentation for both developer and end-user audiences
  • Experience with documentation tools such as Confluence, MadCap Flare, or similar platforms
  • Familiarity with API documentation standards, including OpenAPI or Swagger
  • Strong understanding of software development processes and terminology
  • Excellent written communication and editing skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage a part-time schedule with minimal supervision
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Computer Science, or a related field

Benefits

  • Competitive hourly rate between $35 and $52 depending on experience
  • Flexible part-time schedule with hybrid work arrangement
  • Paid sick leave in accordance with Austin city ordinance
  • Access to company collaboration tools and documentation platforms
  • Supportive team environment with clear project ownership
  • Opportunity to work on meaningful products with a growing user base
  • Potential for expanded hours or a transition to full-time based on business needs
