    Description

At AWS, Security is priority zero. As part of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Security team, we are looking for a Technical Program Manager who is passionate about how AWS identifies, evaluates, and resolves security compliance risk, and wants to help build the systems that make it possible. The Risk and Compliance Remediation (RCR) team is moving from a reactive remediation function to a proactive, intelligence driven remediation engine that eliminates systemic security compliance risk at its root, before findings reach auditors, customers, or regulators.

You will remediate technical security compliance issues across AWS service teams, working with builder teams to understand the technical gap, evaluate solutions, and negotiate an agreed remediation plan and timeline that closes the issue. You will also own the delivery of cross team technical remediation programs, and you will partner with engineering teams on engagements to improve AWS's remediation tracking system, the source of truth for every issue. You will gather requirements, drive technical tradeoffs, and deliver improvements to that system and the automation built on it, translating compliance requirements and risk advisory guidance into actionable technical work. You bring a solid understanding of the design approaches and technologies in your program area, spot risks, and ask the right technical questions to make sure the right tradeoffs are made for the customer and for the engineers who build and maintain these systems.

    Key job responsibilities

    In this role, you will:

    • Own a program of technical remediations, scoping, planning, and driving delivery across multiple AWS service teams, partnering with engineering teams to secure resources, set milestones, and meet deadlines
    • Work technical remediation issues end to end, partnering with security engineers and builder teams to understand the technical gap, evaluate solution options (automation, configuration changes, compensating controls, architectural changes), and negotiate an agreed remediation solution and timeline that closes the compliance issue
    • Negotiate remediation priority with engineering leads alongside their roadmap commitments, using data on risk, audit deadlines, and builder cost to reach decisions that hold up with both service teams and auditors
    • Own technical remediation campaigns across dozens of AWS service teams from evaluation through close, determining whether the work can be done centrally or automated before launching a campaign, and building the case with data, effort estimates, and clear return on investment
    • Serve as theme owner for technically complex root cause themes within RCR"s thematic remediation approach, negotiating remediation prioritization with engineering leads and tracking measurable reduction in recurring findings
    • Drive away team TPM engagements with engineering teams to enhance the remediation tracking system, owning requirements gathering, writing functional requirements and technical specifications, and representing RCR as the customer in design reviews
    • Understand the remediation tracking system"s architecture, its upstream and downstream integrations, and data model well enough to spot risks, ask the right technical questions, and make sure dependencies are not broken by changes
    • Make and document tradeoffs across time, scope, and cost for both remediation programs and tracking system feature delivery, escalating appropriately when designs are too complex or risky
    • Provide operational and execution context for risk acceptance decisions, assessing whether remediation is feasible within a given timeline, its cost and complexity, and the realistic alternatives, as input to the team"s risk acceptance recommendation
    • Translate compliance requirements and risk advisory guidance from security engineers, Security Industry Specialists, and Audit Program Managers into actionable technical work for service teams and tooling partners
    • Define success metrics for your programs and theme reporting for leadership reviews
    • Own program communication, including status reports, path to green plans, and contributions to PR/FAQs, narratives, and OP1/OP2 planning

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
