Description

ABOUT HORIZON FIVEHorizon Five is a practitioner-led consulting firm helping organizations improve performance through data, analytics, automation, AI, business process redesign, and practical transformation. We are not traditional consultants. Our team brings hands-on operating experience and partners with clients to solve real problems, strengthen controls, improve workflows, and build sustainable capability.Role OverviewHorizon Five is seeking a hands-on Technical Manager, Data Engineering who can sit at the intersection of technical delivery leadership and individual contribution. This role is ideal for a senior data or analytics engineer ready for a manager role, or a hands-on technical manager who can lead client work while staying close to the architecture, pipelines, integrations, reporting layers, and automation logic. The right candidate can lead technical delivery across multiple engagements, translate ambiguous finance and data problems into clean solutions, mentor engineers, and serve as a credible technical partner to finance, accounting, FP&A, and IT stakeholders.Scope SnapshotLevel: Technical manager, hands-on project lead, not architecture-only or people-management-onlyClient Load: Able to support multiple concurrent client workstreams with strong prioritizationCore Focus: Data engineering, analytics engineering, integrations, reporting layers, automation, and finance data transformationCompensation Target: Approximately $100,000 to $140,000 base salary, adjusted for experience, technical depth, and client-facing capabilityWhat You Will DoOwn technical delivery across one or more client engagements from solution design through implementation, documentation, and handoff.Stay hands-on by building and reviewing data pipelines, integrations, semantic and reporting layers, automation workflows, and analytics outputs using tools such as Alteryx, SQL, Snowflake, Power BI, Workato, dbt, or equivalent platforms.Translate requirements from finance, accounting, FP&A, controllership, operations, and IT stakeholders into technical architecture, implementation plans, and delivery milestones.Serve as a primary technical point of contact for clients, including working sessions, architecture reviews, status updates, issue resolution, and expectation management.Manage and mentor small teams of data engineers, analytics engineers, or developers. Review work, unblock technical issues, and reinforce quality standards.Identify risks early, including scope creep, data quality issues, source-system limitations, integration blockers, performance issues, and adoption risks.Contribute to Horizon Five internal technical standards, reusable frameworks, delivery playbooks, and approaches for scalable, maintainable client solutions.Support pre-sales and scoping conversations by helping estimate effort, identify delivery risks, and shape practical technical approaches. What Success Looks LikeClients trust the candidate as both a technical expert and a practical business partner who understands finance, data, and execution.Solutions are scalable, well-documented, maintainable, and adopted by client teams rather than treated as one-time technical outputs.Projects move forward with clear architecture, clean handoffs, strong issue management, and fewer senior-leader escalations.Engineers and developers have clear direction, better quality standards, and stronger delivery discipline.Horizon Five expands client relationships because technical delivery is credible, useful, and tied to clear business outcomes. What We Are Looking For7+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, data architecture, technical consulting, or implementation work, with at least 2 to 3 years in a lead or management capacity.Hands-on experience with ETL and ELT, data integration, workflow automation, cloud data platforms, and BI tools such as Alteryx, Workato, dbt, Snowflake, Databricks, SQL, Power BI, or Tableau.Comfort working across ERP, EPM, and finance source systems such as Oracle, SAP, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Business Central, Oracle EPM, OneStream, Workday, or similar platforms.Ability to translate business requirements into technical designs, data models, pipelines, integrations, reports, dashboards, and automation workflows.Experience managing client relationships directly, not just internal technical teams, with the ability to facilitate working sessions and communicate tradeoffs clearly.Strong written communication skills, including technical documentation, solution diagrams, status updates, implementation plans, and executive-ready summaries.Consulting, professional services, finance transformation, or client delivery background strongly preferred, with comfort operating through ambiguity and shifting scope.Exposure to financial close, FP&A, management reporting, SOX compliance, controls, or audit-readiness environments is a strong plus.Ideal Candidate ProfileSenior data or analytics engineer ready to become a manager, or a hands-on technical manager who still enjoys building the actual work product.Tool-agnostic problem solver who can diagnose messy finance and data issues, create structure, and deliver without a large team around them.Credible with finance leaders, controllers, FP&A teams, IT partners, data engineers, and business process owners.Low ego, high ownership, comfortable in a fast-moving consulting environment, and motivated by helping clients improve how work gets done.Experience with a digital accelerator, automation COE, or innovation program focused on scaling practical digital solutions. Why Horizon FiveThis is an opportunity to join a growing practitioner-led firm where technical judgment directly shapes client outcomes. You will help clients modernize data flows, reporting, automation, and analytics, while helping Horizon Five scale its delivery model without losing the hands-on, high-trust approach that makes the firm different.
