MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1) Certificate Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate
2) Endorsement(s)
ESL (NS)English Language Arts 5-9 (BX), Mathematics
5-9 (EQ), Social Studies 5-9
3) Experience/Other 0 - 10 years teaching experience
3+ years of ESL teaching experience, particularly with K-8 English Learners and newcomer
students; bilingual experience preferred.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The selected candidate will provide ESL instruction and support to students in grades 6 -8 at Thompson K-8
International Academy, including sheltered instruction in Math, ELA, and Social Studies, ESL Resource/Support,
and sheltered ESL instruction for newcomer students through ESL Level II. The candidate will support students'
academic and English language.
development through appropriate scaffolding, differentiation, and collaboration with teachers, ESL staff, and
administrators. The candidate will report to Thompson K-8 International Academy from 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.,
Monday-Friday.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide ESL instruction to students in grades 6-8, including self-contained instruction for newcomer students
through ESL Level 2.
- Teach sheltered ESL Math, ESL ELA, and ESL Social Studies and provide ESL Resource/Support.
- Provide language and content instruction that enables English Learners to access grade -level curriculum while
developing English language proficiency.
- Plan, implement, and evaluate effective ESL and sheltered content instruction aligned with grade -level
standards and WIDA ELD Standards.
- Develop and maintain lesson plans, instructional materials, assessments, language objectives, and learning
activities appropriate to students' English language proficiency levels.
- Implement appropriate ESL strategies, scaffolding, differentiation, accommodations, and language supports to
meet individual student needs.
- Establish and maintain a positive, structured classroom environment where students are actively engaged in
meaningful learning.
- Provide accurate and timely student grades based on demonstrated learning, assignments, assessments, and
classroom performance.
- Complete report cards, progress reports, student records, and other required instructional documentation.
- Administer WIDA Screener, WIDA ACCESS, i-Ready, and other required assessments.
- Coordinate and support WIDA testing, including preparation, scheduling, administration, and required
documentation.
- Analyze WIDA, i-Ready, classroom, and other assessment data to identify student strengths, needs, and areas
for growth.
- Track and monitor student progress using WIDA proficiency levels, i -Ready results, grades, progress-monitoring
data, and other assessment measures.
- Use assessment data to guide instructional planning, student grouping, intervention, differentiation, and
progress monitoring.

- Maintain accurate WIDA, i-Ready, assessment, student, grade, attendance, and service data, including
required documentation in Elevation and district systems.
- Monitor and document student growth in English language proficiency and academic achievement.
- Assist with appropriate ESL student placement, scheduling, and determination of instructional service needs.
- Support newcomer students as they transition from self-contained ESL instruction into sheltered and/or general
education classes.
- Collaborate with general education teachers, special education staff, counselors, administrators, and other
support personnel to meet student needs.
- Participate in IEP and 504 planning and implement required accommodations and modifications.
- Participate in MTSS, intervention teams, PLCs, grade-level meetings, department meetings, and collaborative
planning.
- Select and modify instructional materials and resources to meet the academic, language, cultural, and
learning needs of English Learners.
- Communicate regularly with students, parents/guardians, teachers, support staff, and administrators regarding
student progress, grades, assessments, and ESL services.
- Monitor student attendance and communicate concerns regarding attendance, academic performance, or
student needs.
- Establish positive and cooperative relationships with students, families, staff, and administrators.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records, assessment information, and other student information.
- Attend parent/teacher conferences, staff meetings, professional development, conferences, school functions,
and other required meetings.
- Complete required WIDA, assessment, ESL, district, and professional development training.
- Maintain effective and efficient records and meet all district reporting requirements and deadlines.
- Demonstrate professional and ethical standards when working with students, families, colleagues, and the
community.
- Support district ESL initiatives and activities related to English Learner achievement.
- Assume responsibility for meeting course and student performance goals and demonstrating student growth.
- Meet professional obligations through effective work habits, including planning, organization, communication,
collaboration, and meeting deadlines.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
