Primary Purpose Provide high school students with classroom instruction and supervised practical training in barbering. Develop technical, academic, safety, customer service, and workplace skills; prepare students to complete approved coursework and documented hours toward applicable Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) requirements and industry credentials.
Qualifications Education and Certification High school diploma or equivalent. A bachelor's degree may be preferred but is not required for all Trade and Industrial Education certification routes. Current TDLR Class A Barber license, or another current TDLR barbering or cosmetology license that legally authorizes instruction in all assigned specialty content. Special Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of barbering practices, TDLR school requirements, sanitation and infection control, student supervision, and applicable course standards. Ability to teach and assess practical skills, manage student behavior, maintain accurate records, and communicate effectively with students, families, and staff. Experience Documented professional barbering experience sufficient for the applicable educator certification or district assignment route; classroom teaching or industry training experience preferred.
Major Responsibilities and Duties Instructional Strategies Develop written lesson plans aligned with applicable Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, approved barbering curriculum, district requirements, and TDLR standards. Teach haircutting, shaving, styling, grooming, sanitation, safety, laws, ethics, customer service, and business practices as appropriate to the course. Demonstrate techniques and supervise students during all practical work. Use demonstrations, guided practice, assessment, and feedback to build safe, competent performance. Differentiate instruction and implement required accommodations and modifications, including those in individualized education programs, in coordination with appropriate staff. Assess student knowledge and practical skills; maintain grades, progress records, and documentation for program completion and credential preparation. Student Growth and Development Prepare students for relevant industry examinations, licensure steps, and career opportunities without representing course completion as a guarantee of licensure. Serve as a positive role model and support student professionalism, attendance, teamwork, and employability.
Classroom Management and Organization Maintain a safe and orderly barbering classroom and lab. Enforce district student conduct rules and applicable TDLR sanitation, infection control, facility, equipment, and client service requirements. Ensure appropriate instructor presence and supervision for practical training; document student attendance and instructional hours accurately when hours are eligible for TDLR credit. Inspect, clean, secure, and inventory tools, chemicals, supplies, and equipment; report safety concerns and maintenance needs promptly. Maintain required student, instructional, and program records and support district and TDLR inspections or reporting as assigned. Communication and Professional Growth Communicate professionally with parents, students, colleagues, industry partners, and administrators about progress and program needs. Participate in professional development and staff meetings; follow board policy, campus procedures, and district emergency protocols.

Posture and motion: Prolonged standing and walking; frequent bending, reaching, and fine hand movements. Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying of supplies and equipment. Environment: Indoor classroom and laboratory with exposure to noise, hair, water, and approved chemical products. Mental demands: Maintain attention to safety and student supervision and emotional control under stress; occasional irregular hours.
