Primary Purpose

Performs daily tax processing functions with a focus on correcting property tax rolls based on information received from the County Assessor's Office. Conducts general office duties and interacts with taxpayers in person, in writing, over over the phone.

Essential Job Functions

  • Enters appropriate changes to automated computer system daily, based on hard copy revisions received from the County Assessor's Office resulting from official property tax protest settlements and omitted assessments.
  • Researches tax information for taxpayers; computes taxes for court cases, cancels duplicate accounts when requested by the County Assessor; reviews and updates taxpayer accounts; and verifies information on data processing printouts.
  • Calculates tax amounts for omitted assessments using appropriate tax rates and manually prepares and mails revised property tax statements.
  • Prepares daily deposits from cashiers; verifies cash and checks from each individual deposit submitted; and compares totals against collecting software.
  • Prepares all needed items for pickup by courier.
  • Assists in processing Business and Liquor licenses and in mailing each license.
  • Coordinates with Land Use department to enter address and name change corrections.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of office procedures and equipment including basic office machinery and word processing programs and the ability to learn more complex computer programs.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision or with others, maintaining a professional attitude with the public, co-workers and county officials; ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Skill in operating a calculator, computer, and general office equipment and in performing mathematical calculations.
  • Skilled in operating various word-processing, spreadsheet, database and other software programs in a Windows environment.
  • Skilled in customer service.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; and
  • Two (2) years general clerical or bookkeeping experience.
  • Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or related experience in the above fields totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an office setting. Work schedule may include evening and weekend hours on occasion. Travel may be required rarely. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands or arms; and talk or hear. Clarity of vision at short distance is required. May be required to lift up to 20 pounds. Occasional exposure to hostile, violent or offensive individuals. May be subject to exposure to CRTs and VDTs.

Conditions of Employment:

Selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening. Additionally, selected candidate must submit to and pass a county paid criminal background screening. Selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D Drivers License as incumbent shall be appointed to drive a County vehicle during the performance of his/her duties.
