    Description

You're Ready for More Than Another Tax Manager Role

You've built strong technical expertise in public accounting. You know how to review complex business tax returns, solve difficult accounting problems, and help clients make better financial decisions.

But your experience goes beyond tax.

You also know how to review a client's monthly books, lead a month-end close, evaluate financial statements, and explain the results directly to a business owner.

Now you're looking for a role where you can put all those skills to work—and have a meaningful voice in how a firm operates.

At Lange Accounting, you'll have the opportunity to become a key tax and accounting leader in a growing boutique firm in downtown Franklin, Tennessee. You'll work closely with founder Susan Lange, develop a team, serve as a trusted client contact, and help build the systems and processes that support the firm's next stage of growth.

This isn't simply a tax manager job with a few accounting responsibilities added. Both sides of the role matter equally.

The Opportunity: Lead Both Tax and Accounting

You'll take ownership of two essential areas of client service. On the tax side, you'll independently review complex S corporation, partnership, and business-owner individual returns, solve technical problems, coach preparers, and help ensure accurate, timely delivery. On the accounting side, you'll review clients' monthly QuickBooks Online books, lead month-end reviews, evaluate financial statements, resolve accounting issues, and communicate directly with clients about their financial results.

You'll serve as a regular client contact, working alongside a client service manager (CSM) who generally coordinates document requests and routine information gathering. You'll own the substantive financial conversations and recommendations. You'll also coach team members, improve workflow processes, and help create a structure that allows the firm to grow without relying on its founder for every technical decision.

Over time, successful performance can lead to broader Controller-level responsibilities. There may also be an opportunity to explore a longer-term leadership succession or ownership-related path, depending on sustained performance, mutual interest, and future business circumstances. Neither advancement nor ownership is guaranteed.

    What You'll Accomplish

    • Lead Tax Quality and Review. Independently review complex business and individual returns, resolve challenging issues, help the team meet deadlines, and become a dependable technical resource.
    • Own Monthly Accounting Quality. Review client books in QuickBooks Online, lead month-end accounting reviews, identify and correct problems, and ensure financial statements are accurate, timely, and useful.
    • Build Trusted Client Relationships. Become a regular contact for business owners. Explain monthly financial results, answer accounting and tax questions, identify opportunities for improvement, and help clients make informed decisions.
    • Develop a Stronger Team. Review work, coach accountants, establish clear expectations, and help others become more capable and independent.
    • Help Shape the Firm's Future. Improve workflow, strengthen accountability, and help build a scalable operating model that supports continued growth and high-quality client service.

    Why This Opportunity Is Different

    • A genuine combination of tax leadership and controller-level work. You'll use your expertise across tax compliance, monthly accounting review, financial reporting, and client advisory—not be confined to one narrow specialty.
    • Direct influence. You'll work closely with the founder and have meaningful input into team development, client service, and operational improvements.
    • A path toward broader leadership. The role offers the potential to grow into greater Controller-level responsibility, with a possible longer-term succession conversation if the right conditions develop.
    • A seasonal schedule designed with sustainability in mind. During June–December, the firm generally operates on an approximately 32-hour, four-day workweek. Tax season is more intensive, with peak weeks of approximately 48–50 hours.
    • Relationships that matter. You'll work with business-owner clients, see the impact of your recommendations, and help develop the people who serve them.
    • An opportunity to build, not just maintain. You'll have the chance to improve how work gets done and contribute to the future of a growing local firm.

    What You'll Bring

We're looking for an experienced public accounting professional who can independently manage both complex tax review and controller-level client accounting responsibilities from the outset.

    You should ideally bring:

    • At least five years of progressive public accounting experience, including significant tax review and monthly accounting oversight.
    • An active CPA or Enrolled Agent credential; CPA preferred.
    • Strong experience with S corporation and partnership returns and their owners' individual tax returns.
    • Demonstrated experience reviewing monthly QuickBooks Online books, reconciliations, adjusting entries, and financial statements.
    • The ability to lead month-end reviews, identify accounting problems, and direct appropriate corrections.
    • Experience serving as a regular, substantive client contact and explaining financial results directly to business owners.
    • A track record of reviewing others' work, coaching accountants, managing deadlines, and improving team performance.
    • Sound professional judgment, strong communication skills, and a commitment to client confidentiality.
    • Experience with Tennessee franchise and excise tax, ProConnect Tax, Canopy, and advisory services for closely held businesses would be helpful.

    What You'll Receive

Lange Accounting offers a compensation and benefits package that includes:

    • Competitive base compensation, with the final salary range to be determined based on the responsibilities of the role and candidate qualifications.
    • Eligibility for a performance bonus of up to 10% of base pay, tied to firm and team performance.
    • Employer-supported health insurance.
    • Roth 401(k) program with matching provisions.
    • Tiered paid time off, sick time, and volunteer time.
    • Professional development support.
    • Approximately four-day, 32-hour workweeks during June–December, balanced against peak tax-season weeks of approximately 48–50 hours.
    • Benefits, bonus eligibility, and scheduling arrangements are subject to applicable plan terms and business needs.

This is a primarily on-site leadership role in downtown Franklin. After the first 90 days and after tax season, the firm may consider limited work-from-home flexibility, depending on demonstrated performance, effective team leadership, and business needs. A hybrid schedule is not guaranteed.

Is This the Right Next Step for You?

This could be a strong opportunity if you're an accomplished tax and accounting professional who wants to do more than review returns. You enjoy owning the quality of monthly financial reporting, working directly with business owners, developing accountants, and making a growing firm stronger.

You're ready to take responsibility for both tax and accounting outcomes—and you want a career where your contributions can lead to greater influence and opportunity. If you're ready to move from being a strong technical professional to becoming a key leader in a growing accounting firm, we'd welcome a conversation.
