Job Title: Systems Integration Engineer

Job Description

The Systems Integration Engineer supports the development and integration of modern simulation environments, focusing on the architecture and integration of multiple information technology systems within a shared modeling and simulation ecosystem. This role ensures reliable, cohesive operation of data flows, interfaces, and services by applying established technologies and advanced engineering principles to solve complex technical challenges. You will work closely with cross-functional technical teams to integrate systems for large and complex defense programs, contributing to a long-term, mission-focused contract in a highly collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate integration activities for assigned systems and capabilities within a shared modeling and simulation environment.
  • Lead system integration testing to verify interoperability and performance across distributed systems.
  • Assist in resolving technical issues related to data flows, interfaces, and system interoperability.
  • Update and maintain architecture and integration artifacts, including operational views (OVs), system views (SVs), interface diagrams, and related documentation.
  • Develop a deep understanding of system inputs, outputs, data requirements, and message formats to ensure accurate integration.
  • Validate interoperability and data exchanges across systems, ensuring consistency with interface control documents and data models.
  • Support sprint demonstrations, integration events, and technical reviews by preparing and presenting technical content.
  • Maintain an overall understanding of the integrated modeling and simulation solution and how assigned systems fit within the broader architecture.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot data flows and system interfaces to identify and resolve integration issues.
  • Coordinate across multiple technical teams to drive resolution of integration and interoperability challenges.
  • Analyze network latency, bandwidth, and message timing within distributed environments to optimize system performance.
  • Design and secure RESTful APIs at scale, including managing versioning and integration patterns.
  • Develop and validate Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and associated data models.
  • Apply knowledge of simulation gateways, protocols, and data distribution services to support system integration.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant federal and NATO data governance standards in data exchanges and system interfaces.
  • Participate in and contribute to modern DevSecOps practices and CI/CD pipelines for integrated systems.
  • Document integration approaches, decisions, and lessons learned to support continuous improvement.
  • Travel up to approximately 25% to support integration events, technical reviews, and stakeholder engagements as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field.
  • 10+ years of experience in systems engineering or large and complex Department of Defense (DoD) programs (5+ years minimum, with 10+ years strongly preferred).
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Active Secret clearance.
  • Strong in systems architecture, including functional decomposition, requirements development, and interface definition.
  • Experience with system integration or interoperability in modeling and simulation (M&S), command and control (C2), or distributed system environments.
  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot data flows and system interfaces in complex, distributed environments.
  • Ability to coordinate across technical teams to resolve integration issues and drive consensus on technical solutions.
  • Hands-on experience with containerization technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenShift.
  • Experience working in cloud-based DevSecOps environments and modern CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, Jenkins).
  • Experience designing and securing RESTful APIs at scale, including managing versioning strategies and integration patterns.
  • Familiarity with federal and NATO data governance standards and their application to data exchanges and system interfaces.
  • Experience developing and validating Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and associated data models.
  • Familiarity with simulation gateways, protocols, and data distribution services.
  • Ability to analyze network latency, bandwidth, and message timing within distributed environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in complex and challenging technical environments supporting DoD programs.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with MAK Technologies tools such as VR-Forces, VR-Engage, MAK RTI, and VR-Link.
  • Active Top Secret / Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) clearance is preferred.
  • Experience integrating systems within large-scale, long-duration defense contracts.
  • Comfort working in a collaborative team of approximately a dozen technical teammates.
  • Familiarity with command and control (C2) systems and related data exchange standards.
  • Experience participating in sprint demonstrations, integration events, and formal technical reviews.
  • Strong communication skills for presenting complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to document architectures, integration approaches, and system interfaces clearly and accurately.

Work Environment

This role is based on site in a cleared facility in Huntsville, Alabama, working closely with a team of about 12 technical professionals in a complex and challenging environment focused on modern modeling and simulation solutions for defense applications. You will operate within a secure facility, collaborating directly with engineers and specialists across multiple systems and disciplines. The work relies heavily on modern DevSecOps practices, cloud-based environments, containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift), and CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, Jenkins). You will engage with distributed simulation tools and gateways, data distribution services, and advanced networked environments. Travel of up to approximately 25% may be required to support integration events, technical reviews, and stakeholder engagements. The contract supporting this work is planned for a long duration, providing stability and the opportunity to contribute to an extended program lifecycle.
