About the Department
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center and the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University is part of an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and currently includes four clinical sites: Fox Chase Cancer Center Main, Temple University Hospital Main, FCCC Buckingham, and FCCC East Norriton. The department has more than 200 staff across these sites, including 19 attending radiation oncologists, 15 PhD medical physicists, medical dosimetrists, advanced practice providers, nurses, radiation therapists, engineers, and IT support. Educational programs include a radiation oncology residency based at Fox Chase Main with 10 residents, a medical physics residency training program, a dosimetry school based at Fox Chase Main and Temple University Hospital in coordination with the Department of Physics at Temple University, and clinical elective experiences for radiation therapy students.
The department currently sees approximately 2,400 new cancer patients each year, with more than 11,000 new patient and follow-up visits and more than 35,000 individual radiation treatments delivered annually across its four sites. More than 20 clinical trials are currently open in the department for eligible patients, with 50 to 100 patients treated on clinical trials each year.
The department houses 11 linear accelerators, including[CB1] a 45 MV racetrack microtron and multiple radiosurgical and SBRT platforms and 2 brachytherapy suites. Over the past five years, the department has installed six new Varian and Elekta linear accelerators with novel capabilities, including CT adaptive radiation therapy and frameless cobalt-60 radiosurgery. The Buckingham satellite facility includes a CT simulator with 4D capability, a Varian linear accelerator, , while Temple University Hospital Main also has a CT simulator with 4D capability. The CT adaptive radiation therapy program based at Fox Chase Cancer Center Main is one of the largest clinical adaptive programs in the United States, with more than 1,000 unique patients treated on the Ethos linear accelerator since the program began in 2023.
Multiple imaging modalities are located within the department and the Cancer Center, including CT, PET functional imaging, and 3T and 1.5T MRI simulators at Fox Chase Cancer Center Main. Image guidance technologies include Brainlab ExacTrac Dynamic, kV and MV cone beam CT, and surface guidance with Identify and VisionRT. The department also includes two high-dose-rate brachytherapy suites, one at Fox Chase Cancer Center Main and one at Temple University Hospital Main. The Fox Chase suite, equipped with a Varian Bravos® remote afterloader, is general anesthesia capable and supports the system’s prostate implant program, with almost 500 HDR treatments delivered each year. The Temple University Hospital suite is equipped with an Elekta Flexitron® remote afterloader and is primarily used for gynecologic brachytherapy.
