Position Summary
Our client, a global leader in advanced autonomous and robotic solutions across multiple industries, is seeking a System Software Engineer III to develop and maintain the foundational software that powers advanced robotic and autonomous systems. This role bridges embedded firmware and higher-level application software, developing the operating system, middleware, and low-level abstractions that enable reliable, high-performance robotic platforms. The ideal candidate has strong Linux systems expertise, thrives in complex, multi-threaded environments, and enjoys working hands-on with hardware to validate software in real-world conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain system-level software using Rust, C++, and Python.
- Maintain and enhance Linux-based operating systems, including Ubuntu and Yocto.
- Build and support the software layers that connect embedded firmware with higher-level robotic applications.
- Develop tools to improve system performance, observability, scalability, and fleet reliability.
- Debug complex, multi-threaded issues spanning firmware, operating systems, perception, and application software.
- Collaborate closely with embedded, perception, and application engineering teams to deliver robust system functionality.
- Validate software changes directly on robotic hardware and support field testing as needed.
- Continuously evaluate and adopt new technologies to improve platform performance and maintainability.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience developing production software in a compiled language such as Rust, C++, Go, Java, or C.
- Strong experience administering and developing software on Linux-based systems in production environments.
- Experience designing, maintaining, and troubleshooting large-scale, complex software systems.
- Proven ability to debug multi-threaded, distributed, and cross-functional software environments.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly understand unfamiliar systems and resolve challenging technical issues.
- Comfortable working directly with hardware to verify and validate software functionality.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills in a cross-functional engineering environment.
Preferred Qualifications- Professional experience with Rust in production environments.
- Experience developing software for robotics, autonomous vehicles, embedded systems, or other real-time platforms.
- Familiarity with embedded Linux, firmware integration, and hardware abstraction layers.
- Experience with CAN-based communications, robotics middleware, or distributed software architectures.
- Exposure to cloud-connected systems, telemetry, or fleet management platforms.
- Experience working in Agile software development environments using modern CI/CD and version control practices.
- Experience with AI technology is a big plus.
