Switchgear Engineer
TBest Services is seeking an experienced Switchgear Engineer to support a growing electrical and electronics manufacturing operation in Elkridge, Maryland.
The Switchgear Engineer will be responsible for the engineering, design, technical review, and support of low- and/or medium-voltage switchgear and electrical distribution equipment. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of electrical power distribution systems, switchgear components, schematics, protection and control systems, and applicable industry standards.
This position works closely with manufacturing, engineering, quality, purchasing, project management, and customers to ensure switchgear systems meet technical specifications, safety requirements, quality standards, and project deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
Switchgear Engineering & Design
- Design, review, and support low- and/or medium-voltage switchgear and electrical distribution systems.
- Develop and review electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, layouts, and technical drawings.
- Select appropriate electrical components, including circuit breakers, protective relays, bus systems, CTs/PTs, switches, contactors, meters, and control devices.
- Review customer specifications, engineering requirements, and project documentation to ensure technical compliance.
- Support equipment configurations based on voltage, current, interrupting ratings, protection requirements, and application.
Manufacturing & Technical Support
- Provide engineering support to switchgear assembly, panel building, wiring, testing, and production teams.
- Troubleshoot electrical, wiring, control, and equipment-related issues during manufacturing and testing.
- Review Bills of Materials (BOMs) and verify components against engineering drawings and project specifications.
- Work with production personnel to resolve discrepancies between drawings, specifications, and physical assemblies.
- Participate in design reviews and recommend improvements for manufacturability, reliability, safety, and cost.
Testing & Quality
- Support inspection and functional testing of completed switchgear assemblies.
- Assist with troubleshooting failures discovered during electrical or functional testing.
- Verify that finished equipment meets customer specifications and applicable electrical standards.
- Support corrective actions and root-cause investigations related to engineering or manufacturing issues.
Project & Cross-Functional Support
- Collaborate with Project Managers to ensure engineering deliverables meet project schedules.
- Coordinate with Purchasing and Supply Chain regarding technical requirements and component selection.
- Communicate with customers, vendors, and internal stakeholders regarding technical questions and engineering changes.
- Prepare and maintain engineering documentation, revisions, and technical records throughout the project lifecycle.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline preferred.
- Experience with switchgear, switchboards, power distribution equipment, electrical control panels, or similar electrical systems.
- Strong understanding of low-voltage and/or medium-voltage power distribution.
- Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings.
- Knowledge of circuit breakers, protective relays, bus systems, metering, controls, and other switchgear components.
- Experience with electrical design and engineering software such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or similar platforms is preferred.
- Strong electrical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working in an electrical manufacturing or engineered-to-order environment is highly desirable.
- Strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively with engineering, production, quality, purchasing, and project management teams.
Preferred Knowledge
Experience or familiarity with applicable standards and requirements such as:
- UL 891
- UL 1558
- UL 508A
- NFPA 70 / National Electrical Code (NEC)
- ANSI / IEEE standards
- NEMA standards
- Electrical safety and power distribution requirements
Experience with medium-voltage switchgear, protection and controls, power system studies, commissioning, or custom-engineered electrical equipment is considered a strong advantage.
Work Environment
This is a full-time, on-site position in Elkridge, Maryland. The role requires regular collaboration with engineering and manufacturing personnel and may involve spending time on the production floor reviewing equipment, troubleshooting assemblies, and supporting testing activities.
