About the Senior Sustainable Building Commissioning Specialist Role
This position is responsible for leading, managing and fostering the success of the Sustainable Building Commissioning service line at Brightworks. Service Leads lead complex projects, manage client portfolios, and provide technical expertise. They are responsible for the growth and development of employees working in the service area, providing support through mentorship, training, and career opportunities. This position is also responsible for the externally facing business development activities of the service, including proposals, presentations and industry involvement.
The Service Lead is focused on strategic growth, service offerings, and client relationships within a specific domain, focusing on the execution, refinement, and success of a specific service area.
Essential Duties For This Role
Manage the overall operational, budgetary, and financial responsibilities of the Commissioning service area to identify trends, assess staffing needs, and report findings and recommendations to Directors/Principals.
Maintain technical expertise, thought leadership, and client relationships in order to update/modify/create scopes to respond to market needs.
Lead the successful delivery of complex projects by overseeing project staff and supporting strategy, resource allocation, risk management, and stakeholder alignment to ensure high-quality outcomes that meet KPIs.
Prepare and maintain building commissioning documentation such as owners project requirements (OPR), Cx Plan, Training Plan, Cx Report, and Systems Manual by using or modifying existing templates and collaborating with external and internal project teams. Track deliverables against internal and external schedules and deadlines, including specific certification and code requirements.
Complete site visits for all building types, including providing guidance/mentorship/on-site management for supporting Cx Specialists and Senior Specialists.
Work with the Director to analyze monthly targets (e.g., utilization, revenue, sales, project profitability, etc) and identify opportunities for course correction.
Support pod leads and supervisees to ensure utilization targets are met through effective resource allocation and workplans.
Responsible for the growth and development of people and pods working in the service area, providing support through mentorship, training, and career opportunities.
Responsible for the externally facing business development activities of the service area, including proposals, presentation, and industry involvement.
Build and maintain strong client relationships by understanding client needs, providing strategic guidance, and ensuring the successful delivery of outcomes that drive long-term partnerships.
Provide QA/QC within a service area.
Grade Responsibilities
Lead complex client-facing projects and collaborate with senior staff to clarify high-level client goals, staffing resources, project budget, and expected deliverables.
Supervise, oversee and mentor internal team members so that they develop the knowledge, skills, and capabilities to deliver projects within scope, on budget, on schedule, and in the Brightworks way.
Oversee, guide, and QA/QC the delivery of technical analyses, presentations, communications and deliverables to clients within scope, on budget, on schedule.
Develop and maintain strong relationships based on expertise, competence, openness, initiative, and trust with existing and prospective clients, practice area leaders, and influencers within the industry.
Maintain control of the project financials and contracting, complete invoicing, timesheet, and expense approvals per firm timelines. Proactively engage the finance team to address complex issues and meet common goals.
Provide strategic direction to drive financial success.
Lead the firms practice development for this service area through acquiring technical expertise, collaborating on firm innovations, and matching industry leadership in sustainability with client needs.
Identify, discuss, and recommend approaches to new and emerging trends in the marketplace and how practices/services can respond.
Represent Brightworks externally through business development activities, including proposals, presentations and industry involvement.
Foster honest, productive communications throughout the entire firm to support project delivery, business development, and operations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Subject matter expert in reading drawings, specifications, and equipment schedules for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, landscaping, and renewables, as well as all control sequences of operation.
Expertise in certification and code commissioning requirements.
Professional services business acumen.
Strong grasp of delivery processes, key performance indicators, and continuous improvement methodologies.
Deep understanding of trends, challenges, and best practices within the service area.
Familiarity with platforms, software, and tools used within the service.
Assist in business development and scope development/refinement.
Coaching and growing practice area team members.
Identify opportunities for growth and service innovation.
Build and maintain long-term partnerships with clients.
Monitor key performance indicators and ensure service success.
Education, Credentials, & Experience
This position requires a Bachelors degree in a relevant field, e.g., engineering, architecture, construction management, environmental science, sustainability, planning, or related disciplines.
Relevant coursework or internships in sustainability, green building, project management, or business administration.
Advanced degree in green building or sustainability-related field preferred, focused on energy efficiency and/or mechanical/electrical/plumbing systems.
CxP credential.
8+ years of experience in a complimentary field of green building or sustainability project management with 5+ years of experience in building commissioning.
Professional Engineer (PE) and 5+ years of experience working hands on with HVAC/BAS controls, electrical/renewable energy systems, and existing building energy auditing strongly preferred.
Travel Requirements
This position may require infrequent travel for up to 5% of the position, including overnight or multiple days.

Starting pay offered may vary depending on geographic region, external market value, internal pay equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. Starting salary offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range.
