Position Summary
SunEnergy1 is seeking an experienced Surveyor to support utility-scale solar, BESS, substation, and renewable energy construction projects. This position will provide field surveying and layout support throughout project development and construction, working closely with Project Management, Engineering, and Construction teams.
The ideal candidate has experience with large-scale civil construction and is comfortable working in active construction environments, performing construction layout, collecting field data, verifying elevations and grades, and supporting project teams with accurate survey information.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform construction surveying and layout for utility-scale solar, BESS, substation, and civil construction projects.
- Establish and maintain project control points, benchmarks, and site coordinates.
- Perform construction staking for foundations, piles, roads, drainage, equipment, fencing, underground utilities, and other site improvements.
- Verify locations, elevations, grades, slopes, and dimensions against approved plans and specifications.
- Perform topographic and as-built surveys.
- Collect field data using GPS/GNSS, robotic total stations, levels, and other surveying equipment.
- Provide accurate field measurements and documentation to Project Management, Engineering, and Construction teams.
- Review engineering drawings and translate plans into field layout.
- Assist with quantity verification, earthwork measurements, stockpile calculations, and site grading verification.
- Support civil, electrical, and structural construction activities with field survey information.
- Perform quality-control checks on installed work and identify discrepancies between plans and field conditions.
- Prepare and maintain field notes, survey records, reports, and electronic data.
- Coordinate with third-party surveyors, engineers, subcontractors, and project management as required.
- Support drone/UAS mapping and other technology-based surveying activities when applicable.
- Maintain surveying equipment and ensure proper calibration and operation.
- Travel to project sites and work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of professional surveying experience, preferably in construction.
- Experience with construction layout and field surveying.
- Proficiency with GPS/GNSS surveying equipment and robotic total stations.
- Ability to read and interpret civil, structural, electrical, and site plans.
- Strong understanding of elevations, grades, coordinates, benchmarks, and construction tolerances.
- Ability to work independently in active construction environments.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with utility-scale solar, BESS, substations, transmission, or other renewable energy projects.
- Experience with solar pile layout and tracker installation.
- Experience with civil sitework, grading, drainage, roads, and underground utilities.
- Experience with Trimble, Topcon, Leica, or similar surveying equipment.
- Experience with Trimble Business Center, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Carlson, or similar software.
- Experience with drone/UAS mapping and photogrammetry.
- Familiarity with GIS and GPS data processing.
- Surveyor-in-Training (SIT) or Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) certification preferred but not required.
Education
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or a related field preferred.
- Equivalent field experience will be considered.
