Description

Job Title: Surveyor I-ManJob Description

The Instrument Man (I-Man) is responsible for operating and maintaining survey equipment used to collect precise field measurements for boundary, topographic, construction, and ALTA surveys. Working under the direction of the Survey Party Chief, the I-Man assists in conducting field survey operations, ensuring accurate data collection, proper equipment setup, and adherence to company safety standards. This position requires a detail-oriented individual who enjoys working outdoors, has strong technical aptitude, and is committed to delivering high-quality survey data in support of engineering, construction, and land development projects.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and maintain robotic total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, data collectors, digital levels, and related survey instruments.
  • Assist the Survey Party Chief with daily field survey operations.
  • Collect accurate survey measurements and field data for various project types.
  • Perform boundary, topographic, construction staking, ALTA/NSPS, and as-built surveys.
  • Record field notes, sketches, and electronic data in accordance with company standards.
  • Verify survey control points and establish project benchmarks.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of collected survey information.
  • Load, unload, organize, and maintain survey equipment and field vehicles.
  • Inspect and perform routine maintenance on survey instruments.
  • Follow company safety procedures and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Communicate effectively with crew members, project managers, contractors, and property owners as needed.
  • Travel to project sites and work overtime when required by project schedules.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver"s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Basic understanding of surveying principles, mathematics, and geometry.
  • Experience operating survey equipment such as Topcon or similar systems preferred.
  • Ability to read maps, plats, construction plans, and legal descriptions.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently and follow instructions.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 1+ years of land surveying field experience.
  • Experience with GPS/GNSS data collection and robotic total stations.
  • Familiarity with construction staking and boundary surveys.
  • Knowledge of survey software and electronic data collection systems.
  • Surveying coursework or degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field is a plus.

Work Environment

The position is based in our Phoenix office. The role requires the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and to walk long distances across uneven terrain. The candidate must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and perform field duties for extended periods. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Phoenix, AZ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $28.00/hr.
