    The Surgical Technologist-Obstetrics supports surgical and obstetric care by ensuring safe, efficient, and sterile procedures in both the Family Birthing Suites and OR settings. As a core member of the surgical team, this role provides technical assistance during invasive procedures, maintains surgical environments, and assists with direct patient care for mothers and newborns. The technologist is also responsible for equipment maintenance, inventory stocking, and contributing to quality assurance and regulatory compliance efforts.

    Responsibilities:

    Surgical Support & Patient Care

    Function as a core member of the OB surgical team, assisting in
    obstetric procedures by maintaining sterile fields and employing
    aseptic techniques.
    • Anticipate the needs of surgeons and the surgical team during
    procedures, ensuring safe and effective conduct of invasive operations
    under established standards.
    • Prepare, assemble, and handle surgical instrumentation and supplies
    according to physician preference cards and sterile field protocols.
    • Prepare medications for operative field administration under physician
    direction, ensuring correct labeling and handling in accordance with
    safety regulations.
    • Assist in direct patient care for antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum,
    and newborn patients, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse
    (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
    • Perform patient transport, positioning, prepping of surgical sites, and
    specimen handling with attention to identification protocols (2-patient
    identifiers).
    • Assist patients with basic care tasks (e.g., ambulation, hygiene, infant
    care, vitals) and participate in discharge support activities.

     

    Departmental Operations & Compliance

    Stock, clean, and maintain the ORs, birthing rooms, observation rooms
    and antepartum rooms to ensure readiness for procedures and
    availability of required supplies at all times.
    • Conduct comprehensive functional testing of anesthesia equipment to
    verify operational safety and compliance with manufacturer’s
    instructions for use.
    • Assist with the turnover of surgical suites, including instrument
    transport, equipment cleaning, and room setup.
    • Document patient care tasks and observations accurately in the
    Electronic Medical Record (EMR), following validated competencies and
    scope of responsibility.

     

    Team Support & Professional Development

    Serve as a preceptor in Labor and Delivery, mentoring new staff in
    technical and clinical responsibilities.
    • Participate in ongoing education and training to remain up to date in
    surgical technology practices and obstetric care standards.
    • Support safety and regulatory initiatives by demonstrating knowledge
    of standard precautions, PPE use, infection control, and hospital
    policies.

    Qualifications:
    • Education:  High School Diploma or equivalent required.  Associate’s degree in surgical technology, allied health, or a related clinical/healthcare discipline preferred.
    • Experience:  1 year of OB surgical support experience preferred.
    • License/Certifications: CNA Certification required. CST, CST-NCCT preferred.  IA Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training in state(s) where providing care required within 90 days of hire.  IA Adult Dependent Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training in state(s) where providing care required within 90 days of hire.  Basic Life Support (BLS) certification  AHA – American Heart Association rquired within 90 days of hire.
    • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Surgical Scrub Technique: Maintain sterile field and assist during C-sections and OB-related surgical procedures using strict aseptic technique. Newborn Care Assistance: Support initial newborn care post-delivery, including baths and hearing screens (under RN supervision).
      OR Equipment Handling: Skilled in preparing and organizing surgical equipment and supplies based on preference cards to ensure OR readiness.  Infection Control Protocols: Knowledge of standard precautions, personal protective equipment (PPE), and isolation protocols to maintain a sterile environment.
      Hazardous Waste Handling: Proficient in safe handling, transport, and disposal of hazardous waste in compliance with infection control and OSHA guidelines. Patient Care: Knowledge of preoperative and postoperative care, including patient positioning, draping, and dressing application. Wheelchair and Mobility Aid Operation: Basic training in safely handling and assisting with mobility equipment such as wheelchairs and patient transport chairs. Patient Monitoring Setup: Ability to apply basic monitors to patients during surgical prep, following AORN guidelines.
