Schedule & Time Off
- Shift: 7:00 AM 3:30 PM
- On-Call: Weekday call, approximately 4 6 shifts per 6-week period, in 2-hour increments.
- Weekend Call: Weekend call may be required, although it is not anticipated at this time. Candidates should be made aware of this possibility.
- RTO: Maximum of 5 days of requested time off (RTO) for the entire contract duration; preferably, RTO should not be consecutive.
Job Summary
Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and surgical team members, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for handling surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment required during general surgical procedures. The Surgical Technologist demonstrates an understanding of assigned procedures and anticipates the needs of the surgical team.
This role also provides support with patient preparation and transport, building services, and specific patient care duties to promote patient safety and comfort. Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Scrub for general surgical procedures.
- Prepare the operating room by setting up tables, instruments, and supplies according to the type of surgery.
- Ensure proper functioning of instruments and equipment prior to use and report needed repairs appropriately.
- Follow established departmental policies and procedures, quality assurance programs, safety standards, environmental standards, and infection control practices.
- Demonstrate cost-consciousness when opening sterile supplies and handling surgical instruments.
- Respond to emergent situations according to established procedures and notify appropriate personnel.
- Deliver necessary supplies to the unit and ancillary departments.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized room environment.
- Clean and stock operating rooms, return equipment and supplies to designated storage locations, and assist in maintaining cleanliness of assigned areas.
- Provide comfort and support to pre-operative patients while demonstrating sensitivity to patient care and privacy.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient and departmental information.
- Assist the RN with admitting, transferring, and discharging patients from the OR.
- Assist leadership with adjusting par levels to support efficient supply management.
- Participate in discussions with the Unit Manager/Supervisor regarding job enrichment and career progression.
- Complete required education in a timely manner and participate in ongoing department-specific educational programs.
- Actively participate in audits, monitoring activities, and department task forces.
- Support administrative and departmental governance changes related to job responsibilities and operations.
- May train or precept new employees in the Surgical Technologist I role within the core assignment.
- Recognize the importance of and participate in continuing education.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum 1 year of Surgical Technologist experience.
- Previous experience in Neuro OR (Spine and Brain) or Orthopedic OR (Total Joints).
- Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Ability to lift and move patients safely.
- Ability to push, pull, and/or lift case carts, instrument trays, and equipment.
- Ability to work in a patient-care environment that may involve exposure to communicable diseases, unpleasant odors, acute patient conditions, confidential information, and hazardous gases.
- Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- One year of Surgical Technologist experience preferred.
Additional Requirements
- Candidates must be made aware that weekend call may be required, although it is not currently anticipated.
- Maximum of 5 days RTO for the entire contract duration, preferably non-consecutive.
