    Description

    Job Title: Surgical Technician
    Location: Royal Oak, MI
    Duration: 13 weeks
    Schedule: 1 position for 6:30a-3p & 1 position for 11a-7:30p
    Weekend Rotation: Up to 2 per 4-week schedule
    On call: 3-4 per schedule


    Summary:

    • Surgical technologists work under the supervision and delegatory authority of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures.

    • They ensure that the operating room environment is safe, equipment functions properly, and the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

    • Surgical technologists are experts in the theory and application of the principles of asepsis and sterile technique, combining knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

    • They handle the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure, understand the procedure being performed, and anticipate the needs of the surgeon.

    • They ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and are constantly vigilant for maintenance of the sterile field.

    Responsibilities:

    • Prepares and anticipates instrumentation, equipment, and supplies for usage during the procedure.
    • Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure.
    • Performs instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the circulator.
    • Participates in procedure final verification and during the briefing process.
    • Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
    • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to the surgeon during the procedure.
    • Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
    • Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate.
    • Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization, when assigned.
    • Assists other team members with cleaning the operating room to facilitate turnovers.
    • Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.
    • Assists in developing a proper learning environment in relation to orientation and education of personnel and students.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Requirements:

    • High School Diploma required.
    • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program preferred.
    • Prior training required by a hospital, Surgical Technology, or military program that meets the knowledge, skill, and ability required to perform the role.
    • Membership to the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) preferred.
    • Minimum of one-year experience is preferred for all roles.

    Certifications & Licenses:

    • CST from NBSTA or NCCT.
    • BLS AHA or ARC.
