    Job Summary

    The Surgical First Assistant provides direct surgical assistance during operative procedures by positioning patients, providing visualization of the operative site, assisting with hemostasis and wound closure, applying dressings, securing drainage systems, and supporting preparation and cleanup of the surgical suite. Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment..

    Key Responsibilities

    • Positions patient to give best exposure for surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety.

    • Provide visualization of the operative site using appropriate method, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning and irrigation.

    • Utilizes appropriate technique to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.

    • Assists with body pane closures, application of wound dressings, and securing of drainage systems.

    • Assist in room clean up and the removal of soiled case cart, supplies and trash from OR room as needed at the completion of surgical case.

    • Participates as a surgical team member in preparation of the surgical suite according to surgeon"s preference cards with appropriate instruments, resources and supplies.

    Qualifications

    Required

    • High School Diploma plus two years of experience

    • GED plus two years of experience

    • Associates Degree

    • Technical Degree

    • Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

    • Must be able to work in a stressful environment.

    • Proficiency in closing total joints and/or doing bedside for robotics cases.

    • At least 2 years of experience when using the High School Diploma / GED education pathway.

    • Workers will be expected to float to areas of equal or lesser acuity if requested to avoid shift cancellations.

    • This may include scrubbing cases.

    • May need to work past scheduled shift end to complete cases.

    • Potential to flex off hours later in the week to compensate if desired and procedure volume allows.

    REQUIRED CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE

    • BLS provider credentialed from the AHA obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.

    • American Red Cross (ARC) CPR for Professional Rescuers card will be accepted upon hire but renewal must be a BLS provider card from AHA.

    • BLS provider certification from AHA.

    • NBSTSA CSFA certification.

    Working Conditions

    Position may be based in a hospital or ambulatory/mobile imaging setting. Exposure to radiation, high-voltage equipment, and infectious diseases is possible with appropriate safety precautions. Position may require assisting with patient transfers and moving equipment.
