Job Overview: 

The Surgical Services Associate (SSA) is assigned to the Operating Room and provides essential environmental and operational support to Surgical Services.

This position is responsible for supporting the efficient turnover and operation of the surgical department through case cleaning, transport of supplies and materials to and from Sterile Processing (SPD), specimen and lab-result transport, and patient transport and placement.

The SSA works closely with clinical and support teams to help maintain a clean, safe, organized, and efficient surgical environment while following hospital, infection-prevention, safety, and confidentiality requirements.

Responsibilities may vary based on operational needs, client requirements, and applicable standards.

Daily Responsibilities:

• Perform cleaning and turnover of operating rooms and other surgical/procedural areas between cases and as assigned.
• Perform terminal cleaning of surgical areas in accordance with established procedures.
• Remove debris and dispose of waste in designated containers.
• Handle biohazard containers and regulated waste in accordance with established safety procedures.
• Clean and disinfect designated surfaces, equipment areas, counters, walls, floors, and other assigned areas.
• Transport items to and from Sterile Processing (SPD) as directed.
• Transport specimens and lab-related materials/results according to established hospital procedures.
• Assist with patient placement and transport within the scope of the position.
• Pick up and return patients to their assigned rooms or designated areas as directed.
• Maintain appropriate cleaning supplies and equipment for assigned areas.
• Follow infection-prevention, PPE, bloodborne-pathogen, and hospital safety requirements.
• Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality while working in clinical areas.
• Communicate effectively with OR staff, nursing, supervisors, and other hospital departments.
• Participate in the department's on-call rotation as required.
• Respond to assignments promptly to support efficient surgical operations.
• Perform other duties as assigned based on departmental and operational needs.

Job Qualifications: 

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
• Previous housekeeping, environmental services, patient transport, or healthcare experience preferred.
• Previous hospital or Operating Room experience is a plus.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
• Ability to follow detailed cleaning, infection-prevention, safety, and transport procedures.
• Strong communication, teamwork, reliability, and time-management skills.
• Ability to maintain professionalism and patient confidentiality.
• Must be able to participate in required on-call coverage.
• Post-offer medical screening, background screening, and drug testing required.

The position requires close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus, with or without corrective lenses.

Employees may be exposed to cleaning chemicals and other substances requiring the use of PPE or other designated safety equipment.

Work Environment: 

This position is primarily assigned to the Operating Room and Surgical Services environment. The employee may work in operating rooms, procedural areas, patient rooms, Sterile Processing areas, laboratories, hallways, and other clinical areas as required.

Due to the nature of the position, employees may have potential occupational exposure to blood, body fluids, biohazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, and other healthcare-related hazards.

Employees are required to follow all applicable infection-prevention practices, PPE requirements, bloodborne-pathogen procedures, safety protocols, and hospital policies.
