Surgical Navigation and Laser Technician I

General Surgery | UPMC Hamot

Full-Time

This is a unique opportunity to become the first Surgical Navigation and Laser Technician (SNLT at UPMC Hamot, supporting a growing volume of surgical navigation procedures.

This full-time role is currently scheduled Monday through Friday, with 8- or 10-hour shifts based on case needs and the surgical schedule.

Two years of relevant healthcare experience is highly preferred, including but not limited to roles such as Surgical Technologist, Radiology Technician, or Biomedical Engineering Technician.

Position Overview

The Surgical Navigation and Laser Technician I is an entry-level role at UPMC, focused on operating surgical lasers and image-guidance systems to support safe and effective surgical procedures. Working under supervision, this position collaborates with multidisciplinary clinical teams-including surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and surgical technologists-to ensure proper equipment operation and compliance with regulatory standards across UPMC facilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate lasers and image guidance systems in surgical settings.
  • Directly collaborating with clinical staff including, but not limited to, nurses and physicians when surgeries and procedures are taking place.
  • Participating in the surgical room during surgeries/procedures.
  • Placing and operating navigational tools on patients.
  • Maintaining the fiber optic delivery systems in a surgical procedure.
  • Log activities in case tracking software and Kronos systems.
  • Join on-call rotations and travel to UPMC sites as needed (personal vehicle use may be required.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and safety protocols.
  • Pursue on-going professional development and continuing education.
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • High school diploma/GED equivalent required
  • 2 years of relevant healthcare experience OR associate's degree (or higher OR completion of appropriate military training program required
  • Previous experience working in surgical services and/or imaging services preferred
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills, including but not limited to Microsoft Office
  • Must be able to work in environments where medications are stored (no direct contact with medications.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 31 Mandated Reporter Training within 90 days of hire or transfer
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
