Position Summary:

The Surgical Assistant provides advanced technical and clinical support to surgeons by assisting with operative procedures, maintaining sterile fields, and performing delegated surgical-assist functions in accordance with regulatory and organizational guidelines. Working under the supervision of the circulating RN and in close collaboration with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and perioperative team members, this role supports safe tissue handling, exposure, hemostasis, suturing, and overall procedural efficiency.

The Surgical Assistant ensures proper preparation, operation, and care of surgical instruments and equipment while upholding high standards of infection prevention and patient safety. Through strong clinical skill, attention to detail, and effective teamwork, this position contributes to smooth perioperative workflow and high-quality surgical outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare and maintain sterile fields, equipment, and instruments for surgical procedures, ensuring readiness and adherence to established protocols.
• Assist surgeons intraoperatively by providing exposure, controlling bleeding, handling tissue, suturing, positioning instruments, and performing other delegated surgical-assist tasks within scope of practice.
• Collaborate with the circulating RN and surgical team to support patient positioning, equipment setup, specimen handling, and accurate count procedures.
• Monitor and maintain instrument function, arrange for necessary repairs, and ensure proper cleaning and care of surgical equipment following each case.
• Document required information and communicate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and nursing staff to promote safe, efficient case progression.
• Participate in ongoing competency development, quality initiatives, and adherence to perioperative standards to support continuous improvement of surgical services.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

• Current certification as one of the following:

• Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA/CSTFA) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA); or

• Surgical Assistant-Certified (SA-C) through the American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) or National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA).

• Must meet one of the following qualifications upon hire:

• Completion of an accredited surgical first assisting program (CAAHEP or equivalent); or

• Completion of a U.S. Armed Forces surgical assistant training program; or

• At least 1,300 hours of surgical assistant experience within the past three years, performed under the direct supervision of a U.S.-licensed physician, as approved by the applicable certifying board.

• CST certification preferred.

• Must obtain and maintain registration as an Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) with the ND Board of Nursing prior to date of hire (this includes orientation).

Educational Requirements:

• Meets certification and eligibility requirements listed above.

Experience Requirements:

• Previous surgical assistant or perioperative experience preferred but not required.

Special Skills or Training Requirements:

• Maintains familiarity with surgical instrumentation, including proper care and knowledge of functionality.
• Demonstrates effective communication skills, ability to work in high-stress situations, and strong teamwork within the perioperative environment.
• Successfully completes orientation and probationary requirements.

Physical Requirements:

The Surgical Assistant is frequently required to stand for prolonged periods, move throughout the operating suite, and assist with patient positioning and transfer activities. The role includes lifting, pushing, and maneuvering surgical equipment, instrument trays, and sterile supplies. Strong manual dexterity, visual acuity, and the ability to respond quickly in fast-paced operative environments are essential for performing fine motor tasks and ensuring patient safety.

Environmental Requirements:

Work is performed in a high-acuity surgical environment with exposure to bright lighting, bodily fluids, sharp instruments, sterilization chemicals, and complex medical equipment. The role may involve emergent or high-pressure situations requiring calm, precise, and timely responses. Strict adherence to sterile technique, PPE requirements, infection-prevention practices, and safety protocols is necessary to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
