    Job Description

    Purpose of Job:

    Provide surgical assistance to support the physical status of patients during an operative procedure. Works with the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse and/or physician.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Maintains and prepares surgical and delivery suites with appropriate instruments, equipment, and supplies.
    • Assists the surgical team with surgeries/deliveries by demonstrating knowledge of sterile technique and anticipating needs in accordance with specific unit policies and procedures.
    • Assists in maintaining equipment, supplies, and environment in Labor and Delivery Unit.
    • Transports and processes instruments, equipments, and specimens as necessary.
    • Participates as a preceptor of new associates.
    • Promotes self-development by participating in in-services, committees, etc., in accordance with hospital and unit policies.
    • Serves as a role model for consistent demonstration of Sparrow Health System's Customer Service Behavioral Standards of Performance, by respecting the Privacy and Confidentiality of those we serve.
    • Demonstrates knowledge and respects patient, service provider, and organizational confidentiality and HIPAA Security procedures and protocols as defined under the HIPAA Privacy and Security Procedures.
    • Follows established HIPAA privacy procedures when using and/or disclosing protected health information.
    • Maintains and protects patients rights under the HIPAA Privacy standards.

    Secondary Responsibilities:

    • Setting up birthing rooms using sterile technique.
    • Transporting patients.
    • Assisting the nursing staff, Patient Care Technicians, Patient Care Assisstants, and Health Unit Coordinator as appropriate.

    Job Requirements

    General Requirements • Certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) within 12 months of date of hire. Caregivers in this role prior to November 2019 will not be required to obtain certification and will be "grandfathered in". • BLS from the American Heart Association Work Experience Previous surg tech experience. Preferred. Education • High School diploma or G.E.D., or equivalent required • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program • Associates degree. Preferred. Specialized Knowledge and Skills • Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology. • Interpersonal sills to effectively and appropriately communicate with physicians, patients, and Sparrow associates. • Maintain knowledge of current clinical trends, as evidenced by satisfactory clinical competency. Attends all mandatory in-services and meetings • Clerical skills necessary to perform data entry and retrieval on computers. • Requires ability to function in high stress environment. • Basic computer skills. • Serves as a role model for consistent demonstration of Sparrow Health System's Customer Service Behavioral Standards of Performance, by respecting the Privacy and Confidentiality of those we serve.
