Supplier Quality Engineer II

This team manages and resolves supplier quality issues on purchased components, working cross-functionally with plant quality, operations, engineering, series management, and manufacturing engineering across client Axle and Transmission assembly lines. The best candidate will bring hands-on experience with multiple manufacturing processes (machining, casting, stamping, forging), demonstrated project management capability, SPC experience, familiarity with engine, axle, or transmission components, and ideally experience managing quality with global suppliers.

Our client, a Automotive company, is looking for a Supplier Quality Engineer II for their Redford, MI/Hybrid location.
 
Responsibilities:

• Work with the supplier to ensure supplier performance is regularly reported, and that appropriate and timely corrective actions are implemented.
• Manage timely resolution of supplier technical issues to ensure uninterrupted supply to production.
• Strategically lead supplier performance improvement projects in an effort to increase the supplier capability of consistently meeting customer existing or new requirements.
• Documents related to investigation, disposition, and resolution to quality complaints.
• Conduct supplier audits to confirm product conformity, or drive process standardization, waste elimination, and continuous improvement.
• Monitor, communicate and improve key supplier quality KPI’s, including DPPM, Quality Complaints, and capacity to support OTS (On Time Ship) compliance.
• Lead or support effort to establish specific short-term supplier quality goals.
• Champion problem solving and root cause analysis activities with suppliers and customers to eliminate recurrence of non-conformances.
• Work to resolve supplier technical issues in a timely manner to ensure continuity of supply.
• Interface and support cross functional business units on topics relating to supplier quality.
• Oversee containment actions at the supplier to mitigate the impact of quality issues to client.
• Supplier Quality Engineer II is responsible for managing supplier performance and driving timely resolution of quality issues to ensure uninterrupted supply to production.
• Monitoring and reporting supplier performance, and ensuring appropriate corrective actions are implemented in a timely manner
• Strategically leading supplier performance improvement projects to increase supplier capability in meeting existing and new customer requirements
• Documenting activities related to investigation, disposition, and resolution of quality complaints
• Conducting supplier audits to confirm product conformity and drive process standardization, waste elimination, and continuous improvement
• Monitoring, communicating, and improving key supplier quality KPIs, including DPPM, Quality Complaints, and On-Time Ship (OTS) compliance
• Leading or supporting the establishment of short- and long-term supplier quality goals
• Championing problem-solving and root cause analysis activities with suppliers and internal customers to eliminate recurrence of non-conformances
• Overseeing containment actions at the supplier to mitigate quality impact to client
• Interfacing with and supporting cross-functional business units on supplier quality topics

 
Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related
• 1-3 years of related experience
• Demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to present complex technical topics during meetings with suppliers and client management.
• Knowledge of GD&T and MSA.
• Ability to understand metallurgical requirements and interpret reports.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a solution-focused mindset.
• Understanding of quality problem solving tools such as 8D, 5-why, fishbone, etc.
• A customer-focused mindset with the ability to understand and address customer needs and expectations related to supplier quality topics.
• Project management experience
• Statistical process control experience
• Familiarity with Engine, Axle, and Transmission components
• Experience with various manufacturing processes such as machining, casting, injection molding, stamping, & forging.
• Experience working with global suppliers and managing quality across different regions and cultures.
• Knowledge of a foreign language
• An average candidate will meet the baseline requirements: an engineering degree, 1–3 years of relevant experience, familiarity with quality tools (8D, 5-Why, fishbone), and solid communication skills.

• Knowledge of a foreign language is a bonus.

• Typical Day in the Role:
• 50% Meetings and Communication – Internal team meetings, cross-functional collaboration, and external calls/meetings with suppliers to manage quality issues and corrective actions.
