Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional

Major duties and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Provides information to management officials concerning performance issues, assignment changes and task completion.
  • Instructs employees on work-related activities, policies, procedures, and goals.
  • Leads sound quality and infection control programs, assuring that required cultures and tests are performed on all sterilized and High Level Disinfected (HLD) items, and that proper packaging, handling, storage and recall procedures are maintained for all sterile items.
  • May be required to work in the department and recommends work schedules and sequence of operations to provide an even flow and distribution of work, revising work schedules as needed to meet changes in unpredictable workload, changing priorities to meet schedules and customer needs, prepares workload and production reports, identifying the effects of meeting work schedules, plans and leads the work of all employees in the Preparation Unit, Decontamination Unit and Endoscope Reprocessing Area.
  • Assists with internal audits using systematic reviews and quality assurance protocols in the Preparation, Decontamination and Endoscope Reprocessing Area of SPS for strict compliance with all established policies and regulations as well as compliance with Joint Commission, OSHA, & VHA requirements. Data input on shared electronic database, the incumbent must constantly update count sheets, manually and electronically to provide the current needs of the end users.
  • Plans work schedules and sequences of operations on a weekly projected, or longer, basis to assure an even flow and distribution of work, the expeditious handling of priority cases, and meeting schedules and deadlines.
  • Makes recommendations concerning the maintenance or replacement of equipment and maintenance and safety of facilities.
  • The Supervisor evaluates completed work for overall technical soundness and conformance to agency policies through competency assessments specific to processes performed.

Work Schedule: 4: 00 am -12:30 pm. Rotating days to cover holidays and weekends.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases.

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)

Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part.
  • Experience and/or Education:

(1) Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicants ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work;

or

(2) Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position;

or

(3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

Foreign Education. To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education must have been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U. S. programs

  • Certification. None.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates.

GS-08 Supervisory Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)

Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

  1. Ability to manage, interact and deal with individuals of varying backgrounds.

  2. Ability to direct staff and manage tasks to be completed

  3. Ability to oversee and supervise all aspects of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, monitoring, and distribution of RME.

  4. Ability to perform a full range of supervisory duties, including assigning, planning and evaluating work, recommending awards, approving leave, identifying training needs, and resolving staff issues.

Physical Requirements: This work is performed in various settings: decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply (preparation) and in other services and departments throughout the medical facility/campus. The incumbent may be required to work in department processing items or other areas as assigned on an as needed basis. They may also work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty and poorly lit. The employee is subject to the possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other injuries from material handling equipment. The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds).

The incumbent serves as a Supervisory MST, Sterile Processing Service (SPS) for Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Oklahoma City Health Care System under the Associate Chief Nurse for Sterile Processing. SPS provides support to Oklahoma City Health Care System and associated outpatient clinics.
