As a SUPERVISORY FIREFIGHTER, GS-0081-11, you will serve as Deputy Fire Chief, participate in all aspects of the administration/planning of a comprehensive fire prevention, firefighting, rescue program at the installation; responsible for overall direction of the activities of the training, technical services, operations programs and operation of the communications center; review plans, schedules, other management activities of subordinate assistant chiefs, ensuring that all programs are fully functional and operating at maximum efficiency and effectiveness; reassigns employees to balance manning of subordinate programs and otherwise ensures that all programs are manned to accomplish the mission; responsible for review of base plans, policies, strategy, tactics, procedures for fire suppression and prevention to ensure compliance with current and new national consensus standards, National Fire Codes, uniform building codes, Code of Federal Regulations, Occupational Safety and Health Administration policies and procedures, environmental laws/regulations as they apply to fire protection; review new regulations or procedures and disseminates information to subordinates, assuring that such procedures are implemented; assures that station logs and other records pertinent to reports, activities, drills, inspections, responses, fires, etc., are maintained properly and submitted within prescribed time limits utilizing the automated civil engineer system (ACES) when required; recommend changes to established standards of performance, operations, manpower, and equipment required to meet the many variables associated with the assessments of the various functions of the fire protection flight; evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the Fire Protection Flights program and recommends changes to the Fire Chief; prepare, execute, schedule assignments of assistant chiefs, and through them assigned personnel to stations, duties, and equipment; conduct no-notice and pre-briefed fire drills; maintain current knowledge of the base, its structures, all systems related to fire protection; determine the best course of action to minimize loss or damage from fires or explosions; direct the placement of firefighting equipment and personnel to ensure maximum utilization in fire control or aircraft crash/rescue operations; assess the fire scene/emergency situation to facilitate fire/rescue operations brief the Fire Chief upon arrival; supervise safe and proper rescue operations of endangered persons; ensure rescue operations are performed in accordance with established policies and procedures and minimize the risk of additional danger to firefighting personnel and endangered persons; determine adequacy of measures taken to minimize the loss or damage as a result of fire or explosions; respond to hazardous material incidents, and initiates actions to establish control of the affected area with minimal risk to response personnel and the environment; ensure that personnel are properly protected to handle hazardous material; assist the Fire Chief by representing the Fire Protection Flight at a variety of installation, local community, and functional area organizations and by participating in special projects and initiatives; establish, develop, and maintain effective working relationships with personnel, manpower, other staff officials, and municipal and other federal fire departments; direct, coordinate, and oversee work through subordinate assistant chiefs; advise staff regarding policies, procedures, and directives of higher level management; approve or selects candidates for subordinate non-supervisory positions and recommends selections for subordinate supervisory positions taking into consideration skills and qualifications, mission requirements; ensure reasonable equity among elements of performance standards developed, modified, and/or interpreted, and rating techniques developed by subordinate supervisors; explain performance expectations to subordinate supervisors and employees; initiate action to correct performance or conduct problems of employees directly supervised and reviews and/or approves serious disciplinary actions (e.g., suspensions, removals) involving nonsupervisory subordinates; review developmental needs of subordinate supervisors and ensures adequate coverage in organization through peak workloads and traditional holiday and vacation time; demonstrate sensitivity to ideas of subordinates; ensure actions taken directly, as well as those by subordinate supervisors, promote an environment in which employees are empowered to participate in and contribute to effective mission accomplishment; discharge security responsibilities by ensuring education and compliance with security directives for employees with access to sensitive or classified material; apply EEO principles and requirements to all personnel management actions and decisions, and ensures all personnel are treated in a manner free of discrimination.

Qualifications
General Experience: Must have a minimum of one year on-the-job experience in the grade immediately below the next higher level.
Specialized Experience: Performed periodic/unscheduled inspections of base facilities, warehouses, and equipment maintenance operations and evaluated compliance with applicable regulations and hazard system. Recommended measures and methods to correct safety and occupational health deficiencies. Participated in planning for testing of munitions, and assured integration of explosive safety criteria in testing procedures. Reviewed test implementation directives for inclusion of appropriate safety criteria. Prepared supplements to regulations and manuals for aircraft weapons safety and developed local regulations defining applicable mishap prevention procedures.
Substitution of Education for Specialized Experience. Completion of undergraduate or graduate education, the awarded college degree should be in one of -or- be a combination of the following disciplines: Accounting, business, finance, economics, math, statistics, industrial management, marketing, quantitative methods, or organizational management.
