    The Laboratory Supervisor - Technical is responsible for the effective daily operation and oversight of their department(s) with support from their direct leader. Individuals in this role have a split responsibility between technical laboratory testing and department specific leadership.

    Responsibilities:

    Clinical Excellence

    • Prepares biological specimens, arranges and assigns workload by
    priority. 
    • Consistently demonstrates attention to detail in following policies
    related to proper identification and labeling.
    • Provides accurate laboratory test results within established turnaround
    time expectations. 
    • Advanced troubleshooting skills, pre-analytic, analytic and postanalytic.
    • Makes good independent decisions based upon knowledge of the
    overall functions, policies, and procedures in the assigned area to
    ensure accurate and quality patient care
    • Recognizes and interprets quality control outliers and abnormal patient
    results
    • Performs preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on highly
    complex equipment.
    • Uses a variety of computer systems for orders, results, tracking,
    quality control, and problem solving. 
    • May perform specimen collections from patients of all ages

     

    Operations

    Adjusts staffing needs and staff assignments based on workload to
    optimize productivity and efficiency. Plans, coordinate and directs the
    daily activities of the department by helping the team prioritize the
    work and allocate resources appropriately.
    • Supports implementation of department specific changes through
    effective leadership and change management.
    • Responsible for assisting their direct leader in creating and maintaining
    department specific policies and procedures.
    • Communicates department specific goals and helps lead the team to
    be successful.
    • Frequently evaluates daily operations and services and communicates
    improvement opportunities to their direct leader. Works with internal
    and external stakeholders to implement and communicate the
    changes.
    • Acts as the subject matter expert for their department(s) services. 
    • Monitor and oversee safety procedures in their respective
    department(s)

     

    People

    Ensures effective recruitment, selection, supervision and retention of
    direct reports
    • Responsible for the approval of time keeping and scheduling for their
    direct reports.
    • Conducts annual performance appraisals for assigned team
    members.
    • Develop and maintain communication to establish regular and
    consistent communication with team members and their direct leader.
    • Share concerns and/or escalate issues to their direct leader
    • Holds regular department and/or lab specific huddles.
    • Responsible for ensuring all employees have been properly trained and
    completed competency assessments as scheduled.
    • Oversees supply items in a cost-effective manner, recognizing when to
    reorder, and assisting with unpacking and/or restocking items.

     

    Quality

    Always ensures inspection readiness of their department(s) following
    CAP guidelines as well as other relevant governing bodies.
    • Participates in CAP inspections
    • Identification, investigation, and escalation of opportunities identified
    through adverse event reporting, via key process indicators, huddle
    discussions and customer feedback.

     

    Qualifications:
    • Education: Associate degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting the requirements defined in CLIA regulation 42 CFR 493
      OR Bachelor's Degreee in a chemical or biological science. Must include at least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include either-
      • 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or
      • 24 semester hours of science courses that include:
      o 6 semester hours of chemistry;
      o 6 semester hours of biology;
      and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory
      technology in any combination
      Experience: 2 years Clinical Laboratory experience required
    • License/Certifications: MLS, MLS-AMT, IMLS-ASCP, MT-AMT, MT (AAB)
    • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Basic computer skills.
