Supervisor – Core Laboratory Technical Operations (Chemistry & Hematology)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Supervisor – Core Laboratory Technical Operations to lead daily operations within a high-volume Core Laboratory. This leadership role is responsible for overseeing technical operations across Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, and Immunodiagnostics, ensuring high-quality laboratory services, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and exceptional patient care. The ideal candidate is a proven laboratory leader with strong technical expertise, supervisory experience, and a passion for developing high-performing teams.

  • Employment Type: Direct Hire

  • Schedule: Full-Time

  • Shift: Monday – Friday, 5:30 AM – 2:00 PM

  • Work Setting: Core Laboratory


Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations

  • Direct and oversee daily operations within the Core Laboratory to ensure efficient, accurate, and timely testing.

  • Maintain technical competency in assigned laboratory disciplines and serve as a subject matter expert.

  • Collaborate with laboratory leadership, pathologists, and interdisciplinary teams to support organizational goals.

  • Optimize staffing, workflow, resource utilization, and operational performance.

  • Ensure the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of laboratory testing and reporting.

Quality & Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laboratory regulations, accreditation standards, and quality management systems.

  • Maintain continuous readiness for inspections and regulatory surveys.

  • Monitor quality indicators and implement corrective and preventive actions when necessary.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain laboratory policies, procedures, and standardized workflows.

Leadership & Staff Development

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop laboratory personnel through coaching, training, and performance management.

  • Conduct competency assessments and support continuing education initiatives.

  • Participate in recruitment, onboarding, performance evaluations, and succession planning.

  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and accountable workplace culture.

Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve laboratory quality, efficiency, turnaround times, and customer satisfaction.

  • Lead performance improvement initiatives and workflow optimization projects.

  • Promote innovation and continuous improvement to support current and future laboratory operations.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Serve as a liaison between laboratory leadership and technical staff.

  • Build strong working relationships with physicians, pathologists, and other healthcare professionals.

  • Ensure effective communication regarding operational priorities, quality initiatives, and organizational objectives.


Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related laboratory science field.

Certification

One of the following nationally recognized certifications is required:

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) – ASCP

  • Medical Technologist (MT) – ASCP

  • Or an equivalent certification appropriate to the laboratory specialty (e.g., MB, CT, M, HTL, CG, CHT).

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of technical clinical laboratory experience.

  • Previous laboratory leadership, lead technologist, supervisor, or management experience.

  • Strong technical expertise in multiple Core Laboratory disciplines.


Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with extensive experience in the following laboratory disciplines are highly preferred:

  • Clinical Chemistry

  • Hematology

  • Coagulation

  • Urinalysis

  • Immunodiagnostics

Additional preferred qualifications include:

  • Previous supervisory or management experience in a Core Laboratory.

  • Experience leading high-volume laboratory operations.

  • Strong background in laboratory quality management and regulatory compliance.

  • Experience implementing workflow improvements and operational efficiencies.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory regulations and accreditation standards.

  • Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and laboratory technologies.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced laboratory environment.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, twist, and move throughout the laboratory during the workday.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds when necessary.

  • Ability to work safely with laboratory instrumentation, chemicals, biological specimens, and infectious materials.

  • Compliance with all laboratory safety protocols and use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).


Work Environment

This position is based in a high-volume Core Laboratory supporting a wide range of clinical testing services. The role requires a hands-on leader who can balance operational management with technical expertise while ensuring compliance with quality standards and regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will play a key role in driving laboratory performance, staff engagement, and continuous process improvement.


Preferred Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Current MLS (ASCP) or MT (ASCP) certification (or equivalent).

  • Strong technical expertise in Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, and Immunodiagnostics.

  • Proven experience as a Lead Technologist, Team Lead, Supervisor, or Laboratory Manager.

  • In-depth knowledge of laboratory regulatory standards, quality systems, and accreditation requirements.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to build and develop high-performing laboratory teams.
