The Job

This recruitment is only open to current San Bernardino County, San Bernardino County Fire Protection District, or Special Districts employees who hold a regular, contract, extra-help, recurrent, Public Service Employee, Work Experience Program (WEX), or intern position.

The Sheriffs Department is recruiting for Supervising Sheriffs Custody Specialists to supervise and plan the work of Sheriffs Custody Specialists and support staff assigned to a Sheriffs Detention Center. Duties include evaluating work performance; participating in personnel decisions, including hiring and disciplinary actions; establishing work standards, systems, and office procedures; supervising the monitoring and control of public and inmate movement and activities within a detention facility; maintaining records; compiling information and preparing reports; and resolving unusual and complex problems referred by subordinates.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

1) Background: Prior to appointment, applicants will be fingerprinted and must pass an extensive background investigation, including a polygraph examination. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony.

2) Availability: This department is a "24/7" operation. Applicants must be available for all shifts, including mandatory overtime; refusal of assigned shift may result in removal from the list or termination. The incumbents will be required to work rotating, night, weekend, day, on call, and graveyard shifts, as well as holidays and weekends. Including mandatory overtime.

3) Facility: Supervising Sheriffs Custody Specialists usually perform most duties in areas protected from prisoners by glass or screens within locked security facilities. Employees may be required to remain at the facility during their meal period.

4) Sponsorship: Please note San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.

Minimum Requirements

Experience: Two (2) years of full-time equivalent work experience performing specialized administrative assignments in a Sheriffs Detention Center (equivalent to a Sheriffs Custody Specialist in San Bernardino County), processing booking documents, court documents, releases, court returns, and bail bonds.

  • AND -

Education: Possession of a college degree (Associate or higher) -- OR -- Fifteen (15) semester (23 quarter) units of completed college level coursework in administration of justice, criminal justice, behavioral or social science, humanities, public or business administration, or other relevant coursework.

Substitution: An additional twelve (12) months of full-time equivalent office clerical work experience in a legal, law enforcement or corrections environment may substitute for the required education.

A list of completed coursework or legible transcripts MUST be submitted with the application if the applicant does not possess an Associate degree or higher as described above.

Degree and/or coursework must be from an accredited college or university recognized by the US Department of Education.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Progressively responsible administrative experience, including serving as a Duty Officer in a Sheriffs Detention facility.
  • As associate degree or higher in administration of justice or closely related field.
  • The ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Excellent problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
