ESCALON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

MAINTENANCE GROUNDS

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, supervises, plans, performs, and assists in the gardening, grounds keeping, and care of landscaping of school grounds; applies herbicides, fertilizers, and other materials necessary for the care and management of landscaped areas; responsible for irrigation systems servicing landscaped areas; responsible for the use, care, transporting, and maintenance of landscape maintenance equipment such as power mower equipment and mowing of all lawns within the district; operates tractors and related equipment and implements in caring for grounds; performs pruning and care of trees within the district and operates lifts and related equipment; performs other work related to landscape care and maintenance; may work with maintenance crew on other maintenance and construction work as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION

May include, but not limited to:

  • Operation of complex power mowers in the mowing of lawns at all sites in the district
  • Prune trees using pruning power and manually operated equipment including power lifts
  • Plan and perform gardening and maintenance
  • Operate trucks and trailers in traveling from site to site and in transporting tractors and other equipment
  • Requisition required materials and equipment
  • Supervise and perform preparation of soils
  • Maintain unplanted areas
  • Drive tractors and related implements in maintaining grounds
  • Lay out and stripe playing fields, drags, conditions, and prepare tracks and athletic fields
  • Use materials and equipment for the control of rodents and other pests
  • Spray and/or spread fertilizers, herbicides, other materials for the care and conditioning of landscaped and open ground areas
  • Operate, repair and maintain mechanical equipment and irrigation systems
  • Install, maintain, and repair sprinkler systems and components, fences, and playground equipment
  • Operate mowers, forklifts, tractors, sprayers, spreaders, farming implements, trucks, trailers, power lifts, etc.
  • Supervise others in above tasks
  • Perform other duties as directed consistent with the general areas of landscape care and management and other maintenance and construction related work

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge and Application of:

Basic operations of tools and equipment required to complete tasks as listed in the above work duties, terms used in construction and building maintenance work; must have knowledge of safe work practices, including safe usage of hazardous chemicals and/or materials.

Ability to:

  • Lay out landscaped areas and select plant materials
  • Do skilled gardening work
  • Coordinate and supervise others in grounds care
  • Operate and maintain mowing and gardening equipment.
  • Read printed materials
  • Speak and hear to conduct normal in-person and telephone conversations
  • Perform heavy physical labor and to perform the duties described in above, including ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects
  • Operate equipment and use hand tools, and handle and work with various materials and objects. Ascend and descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps
  • Walk or Stand for extended periods
  • Ability to withstand exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid or windy conditions caused by weather.

Education / Experience:

Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience: One year's experience in the areas of the work described above.

Possession of an appropriate California operator's license and be insurable at the standard rate applied to the Escalon Unified School District.

Highly Desirable: Possession of an up-to-date valid Qualified Applicators Certificate

Must meet District minimum requirements through practical and/or written examination.

Salary Level: 56 - Classified Salary Schedule
