    JOB TITLE: SUBSTITUTE CUSTODIAN

    JOB SUMMARY: Assists in physical plant operation, maintenance, care, and preservation of the facilities, grounds, and equipment of a school campus, as well as operational support to campus educational activities.

    ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: With minimal direct supervision, performs minor and preventive maintenance on school plant, equipment, and grounds; custodial care, cleaning, and preservation tasks; operational tasks in support of school staff, i.e., movement and setup of furnishings and equipment and supplies; operation of plant systems for heating, lighting, security, and communications. Other related duties and tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This job is performed indoors and outdoors with interruptions. Assignments that include hours when students are present will encounter frequent interruptions and high levels of noise and activity commonly associated with children's activities.     REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE: methods of maintaining, cleaning, and preserving a variety of surfaces; proper use of a wide range of chemicals according to state and federal regulations; handling and disposing of hazardous materials and blood- borne pathogens with care. SKILLS: to work effectively as a member of a team; to remain calm under pressure; to be organized, dependable, and flexible; to maintain cooperative, positive, and effective support relationships with staff, students, parents, and the public; to be observant of facility using all available senses; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for, a diverse population. ABILITIES: to work independently, without direct supervision; to understand, follow, and carry out oral and written directions; to learn procedures and follow instructions; to safely operate vehicles and/or other job-related equipment; to perform physical labor; maintain strict confidentiality.

    WORK RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to the supervisor in charge of facilities. Takes daily direction from plant manager, building principal, and/or site supervisor depending upon assignment. Daily interaction with building/campus staff and students. Frequent interactions with parents and the community.

    WORK SCHEDULE: Work on an on-call basis; evening shifts with varied times.
