    TITLE: CUSTODIAN

    REPORTS TO: Custodial Supervisor & Building Principal

    EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Substitute

    FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

    POSITION SUMMARY: Perform the cleaning and other tasks necessary for the proper upkeep of a building and its grounds.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Clean the assigned areas of the building as instructed, performing such activities as sweeping, dusting, scrubbing, stripping floors, shampooing carpets, waxing.
    • Perform duties that are particular to the assigned building and shift; for example, prepare, clean and reorganize the lunchroom, or clean the locker rooms and gymnasiums.
    • Complete minor repairs and maintenance projects as assigned; for example, electrical repairs, plumbing tasks, carpentry projects, painting.
    • Load and unload supplies, furniture and equipment, including food and other cafeteria supplies when needed.
    • Care for the lawn and shrubs; remove snow, ice and litter, and perform other outdoor tasks, as needed, to keep the grounds safe and pleasant looking.
    • Assist with the preparation and clean-up related to school or community extended-day activities.
    • Accompany and assist health and environmental inspectors.
    • Supervise the student workers and volunteers who are assigned to custodial duties.

    OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Work cooperatively with the Maintenance Department.
    • Requisition supplies through the Head Custodian, if applicable, or the Maintenance Director.
    • Maintain an appropriately neat and clean personal appearance. May be required to wear a uniform on the job.
    • Observe all safety and health regulations of the school district. May be required to assure the appropriate labeling of hazardous materials.
    • Maintain a positive relationship with staff, students and parents.
    • Complete all required forms; for example, sick leave and vacation, as directed. When an administrator is unavailable in the building, forms must be mailed or delivered to the central office.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Custodial Supervisor, Principal or, if applicable, the Head Custodian.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • High School diploma or GED preferred.
    • Must be age 18 or older.
    • Ohio Driver's License.
    • Experience in maintenance, repair work and cleaning, particularly floor cleaning, preferred.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Basic skills in repairing, cleaning, lawn care and snow removal.
    • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
    • Ability to work effectively for a full shift without supervision.
    • Ability to operate the equipment listed below.

    EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

    • Cleaning equipment, such as vacuum cleaners, floor strippers and polishers, mops, carpet cleaning machines.
    • Basic hand tools.
    • Power tools, such as drills and saws.
    • Mowing and snow removal equipment.
    • One-man electrical lift.
    • Other tools and equipment associated with building and grounds upkeep.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    • Exposure to all weather conditions.
    • Some work in confined spaces, dark spaces, dirty work areas.
    • Exposure to hazardous driving conditions.
    • Regular requirement to lift, push, pull, carry tools and equipment up to 50 pounds.
    • Regular requirement to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, handle, read, speak, hear.
    • Exposure to chemicals and contaminants, such as cleaning products, weed killers, flammable and combustible liquids.
    • Use of potentially hazardous equipment; for example, platforms, ladders, electrically powered equipment and electrical wiring.
    • Exposure to blood or other bodily fluids and tissue.
