Role Overview
The Substation Protection & Control Relay Engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, troubleshooting, and implementation of protection and control systems for utility transmission and distribution substations. This role supports projects throughout their lifecycle by developing relay philosophies, protection schemes, engineering studies, and detailed design packages that enhance system reliability, safety, and operational performance. Working closely with utility clients, project teams, and field personnel, the engineer investigates existing system issues, develops innovative solutions, and ensures compliance with industry standards and client requirements. Through technical expertise and collaboration, this position plays a critical role in maintaining and modernizing the electrical grid.
How you will make an impact
- Perform protection and control engineering studies, analyses, and calculations to support new substation installations, system upgrades, and modernization projects.
- Develop protection philosophies, relay settings criteria, one-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and detailed protection and control design packages.
- Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve protection system performance issues, relay misoperations, equipment failures, and other substation control-related challenges.
- Utilize industry software tools such as ASPEN, SKM, EasyPower, ETAP, or similar platforms to perform fault studies, coordination studies, relay evaluations, and system modeling.
- Collaborate with utility clients, project managers, engineers, technicians, and field personnel to ensure designs meet operational, reliability, safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Support commissioning, testing, construction, and field implementation activities while providing technical guidance throughout project execution.
What you will bring
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology with a focus in Power Systems or a related discipline.
- 5-12 years of experience in protection and control engineering, relay engineering, power systems engineering, or a related utility field.
- Experience utilizing utility software programs such as ASPEN, SKM, EasyPower, ETAP, or similar power system analysis applications.
- Working knowledge of transmission and distribution protection schemes, relay applications, fault analysis, coordination studies, and substation design practices.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to prepare technical reports, studies, calculations, and engineering documentation.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate effectively across teams.
Work Environment & Preferences
- Work Model: Remote. This position offers a flexible remote work arrangement, allowing team members to collaborate effectively while working from their home office and supporting projects across multiple client locations.
- Preferred Schedule: Full-time position with a flexible remote work schedule. Standard business hours are Monday through Friday, with flexibility to support project deadlines, client meetings, field activities, commissioning efforts, and occasional after-hours support as required.
- Travel Requirements: Occasional travel up to 25% may be required for client meetings, site visits, field investigations, commissioning support, testing activities, project reviews, and stakeholder coordination. Travel frequency will vary based on project assignments and business needs.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to work in both office and field environments, including substations, utility facilities, and active construction sites. Must be able to sit for extended periods while performing computer-based engineering work and occasionally stand, walk, climb stairs, and traverse uneven terrain during field visits. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safely access utility facilities when supporting site assessments, testing, or commissioning activities. Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
