Electrical Substation Engineer II (Mid-Level)

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a motivated Electrical Substation Engineer II to join our growing Power Delivery team in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. This position supports the planning, design, and execution of electrical substation projects for utility, industrial, and energy clients. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years of substation engineering experience and a strong understanding of high-voltage power systems, substation design principles, and utility industry standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering and design activities for transmission and distribution substations.
  • Develop physical substation layouts, equipment arrangements, grounding plans, conduit plans, and electrical calculations.
  • Prepare and review engineering deliverables, including one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and protection and control design packages.
  • Coordinate with civil, structural, protection & control, transmission line, and construction teams throughout project execution.
  • Support equipment selection and specifications for transformers, breakers, switches, reactors, capacitor banks, and other substation equipment.
  • Participate in client meetings and technical discussions.
  • Review vendor drawings and equipment submittals.
  • Assist with project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and engineering estimates.
  • Support construction, commissioning, and field activities as needed.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and utility requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Performs intermediate calculations under the supervision of a more senior engineer. Solves problems using well established scientific principles.
  • Has good understanding of the NEC and how to apply it to design on electrical systems.
  • Develops electrical data sheets for electrical equipment.
  • Develops low voltage and medium voltage wiring schematics with supervision.
  • Able to analyze data and understands the relationships and correlations.
  • Ability to draw conclusions and present finding to senior leadership.
  • Proactive about learning new information and skills.
  • Initiates development of personal objectives aligned with those of the organization.
  • Seeks feedback and uses it effectively.
  • Has good understanding of the complete design and has good input into ways of improving the design.
  • Utilize codes and standards to complete assignments.
  • Identifies the customer's both internally and externally.
  • Handles various assignments, including rework, in timely manner to meet schedule deadlines.
  • Performs assigned work efficiently and effectively to maximize person productivity.
  • Performs quality checks of the design in a team environment to ensure accuracy.
  • Carries out assignments carefully while focused on details.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering minimum required.
  • 2-4 years' minimum relevant experience in refining and petrochemical industry.
  • Receives limited instruction on routine work and detailed instruction on new assignment from more experienced engineer.
  • Adjusts to varying demands of work and performs well.
  • Communicates effectively orally and in writing. Present ideas clearly and in professional manner.
  • Participates on teams effectively. Accepts direction from the team. Individually contributes to success of the team.
  • Supports project teams and departments in a positive and productive manner. Works well with other to accomplish common goals and objectives.
  • Serves as point of contact for external or internal customers.
  • Follows through on commitments made to internal and external customers.
  • Able to manage multiple responsibilities with set expectations and meet deadlines.

Working Conditions

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Minimum of 3 years of electrical substation engineering experience.
  • Experience supporting transmission and distribution substation projects.
  • Knowledge of substation layout and design practices.
  • Familiarity with utility standards, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and applicable industry codes.
  • Experience using engineering and design software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar tools.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must currently reside in the Dallas-Fort Worth area or be willing to relocate prior to starting employment.

Preferred

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
  • Experience working with EPC contractors, engineering consulting firms, utilities, or power delivery organizations.
  • Exposure to high-voltage substations ranging from 12kV through 500kV.
  • Experience supporting construction and commissioning activities.
