Position Summary

The SUD Counselor provides counseling and treatment (related to the employees scope of practice) to patients with addictive problems, performs discharge and referral summaries for patients and maintains client case files. We offer all of the SUD counselors monthly continuing education credits (CEUs) as well as reimbursement for certification fees.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma required, Associate or Bachelors degree in related field preferred OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Valid CCAPP, CADTP or CAADE registration required for Reg. SUD Counselor.
  • Valid CCAPP, CADTP or CAADE certification required for Certified SUD Counselor.
  • 315 hours approved, AOD specific education.
  • 160 hours of supervised work experience (field practicum).
  • 2080 hours of work experience.
  • Passing score on the IC&RC Written Exam, CATC exam or equivalent California approved test.
  • Experience counseling people with substance abuse challenges using evidence-based practices.
  • Knowledge of the local treatment community and referrals preferred.
  • If in recovery, we prefer you have at least two years sobriety.
  • Excellent customer service experience including active listening, problem solving, and the ability to remain calm in emotional or stressful situations.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing and demonstrate a high level of listening skills.
  • Computer (PC) literate in general office functions such as word processing, email and database software.
  • Commitment to HIPAA and ability to abide by standards of professional ethics and maintain confidentiality.
  • Current CPR and first aid certificate or willingness to be trained required within first (90) ninety days of employment.
  • Must have a valid drivers license with an insurable driving record that meets the organizations insurance policy.
  • Must be willing to successfully complete the credentialing process.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide counseling and treatment services to patients with substance use challenges.
  • Assume responsibility for an assigned caseload of patients and maintain accurate record of their intake, assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, billing and discharge.
  • Provide training and support to registered counselors.
  • Adherence to infection control procedures, including but not limited to, standard precautions of temperature monitoring, hand washing, symptom self-monitoring, masking and social distancing.
  • Assist and support the Center/Department/Program to meet standards of High Reliability.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The work environment is characteristic of an office environment. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands and arms to reach. The employee is also required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must also possess hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

The employee may be in contact with individuals and families in crisis who may be ill, using substances and/or not attentive to personal health and safety for themselves or their homes. The employee may experience a number of unpleasant sensory demands associated with the clients use of alcohol and drugs, and the lack of personal care. The employee may also be exposed to bodily fluids (blood, urine) and hazardous chemicals.
