Studio Technician - Fabrication Studios

The Cleveland Institute of Art invites applications for the position of Studio Technician, Fabrication Studios, reporting to the Assistant Director of Studio Operations. This position supports the Fabrication Studios, CIA's school-wide fabrication facilities, and plays a key role in providing students, faculty, and staff with a safe, organized, and effective environment for learning and creative production.

 

Working closely with faculty and Studio Operations staff during the academic year, the Studio Technician supports the delivery of curriculum through the management of studio facilities, equipment, materials, supply stores, and specialized programs. The successful candidate will provide direct support to students utilizing the Fabrication Studios and serve as a technical resource for fabrication processes, materials, and equipment.

 

Primary responsibilities include maintaining and organizing studio spaces, tools, and equipment; conducting Foundation safety training for first-year students; facilitating demonstrations on fabrication processes, materials, and safe equipment operation; overseeing environmental health and safety practices; and assisting with special departmental initiatives. The Studio Technician also supports Federal Work-Study student employees as needed and contributes to projects involving studio improvements, archives management, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), HAZWOPER compliance, and other operational needs.

 

The ideal candidate will possess broad working knowledge of fabrication processes, materials, and techniques, as well as a demonstrated commitment to safe studio practices. Candidates should be comfortable working with students at varying skill levels and able to explain technical concepts in a clear and supportive manner. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential.

 

The Studio Technician should be familiar with traditional and digital fabrication technologies, including laser cutters, CNC routers, and 3D printers, and have the ability to troubleshoot equipment issues and perform basic maintenance and repairs. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, is required. Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud applications, particularly Photoshop and Illustrator, is preferred.

 

Successful candidates must be able to work independently, manage multiple priorities, collaborate effectively with faculty and staff, and identify opportunities for operational improvements that enhance the student experience and support departmental goals.

 

A BFA or BA in Art and Design, a bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent professional experience is required.

 

This position requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance and to stand and walk for the majority of the workday.

 

This is a full-time, non-exempt position that works during the academic year, from August through mid-May.  CIA has a 35-hour work week.

 

Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
