    Preferred Student Classification Nature & Purpose of Position

    The Peer Tutor will provide academic support to students enrolled in HLTH 1360 - The Fundamentals of Population Health and Health Careers. The position is designed to help students understand and apply course concepts, remain engaged in the course, and connect with appropriate academic resources when needed.

    The Peer Tutor may assist students with understanding course concepts related to population health, health behavior theories and models, needs assessments, health program planning, intervention strategies, budgeting and resource management, funding opportunities, program evaluation, and interpretation of evaluation data. The Peer Tutor will reinforce course material and support student learning but will not replace instruction provided by the course faculty.

    Two Peer Tutor opportunities are available: two for a face-to-face section and two for an online section.

    For the face-to-face position, the Peer Tutor will attend scheduled class meetings throughout the semester and interact with students during class. For the online position, the Peer Tutor will be added to the Blackboard course by the technical support team and will engage with students and monitor course activity.

    The Peer Tutor will also hold regular office hours each week to provide additional academic assistance to students.

    Other Requirements for the Position

    • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
    • Previous experience as a tutor, peer mentor, teaching assistant, or in a similar student support role.
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and learning needs.
    • Strong understanding of population health concepts, health behavior theories and models, and evidence-based health interventions.
    • Familiarity with health program planning, including needs assessments, intervention strategies, implementation planning, budgeting, and evaluation.
    • Ability to explain complex course concepts in a clear, supportive, and approachable manner.
    • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to interpret and discuss basic statistical results, evaluation data, and program outcomes.
    • Interest in population health, public health, health careers, or a related field.
    • Ability to encourage student participation, engagement, and academic success.
    • Dependability, professionalism, and willingness to serve as a positive role model for students.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with course instructors and connect students with appropriate academic resources.
