Nature & Purpose of Position

Nature and Purpose of Position:

The Recovery Coach performs duties and responsibilities under the general direction of the Coordinator of Coaching in the Academic Success Center. The Recovery Coach will provide structured learning support and techniques to aid SHSU students in their learning process as they work towards Academic Recovery. This position will work independently and in team settings to promote academic success, student engagement, personal development, and meaningful connections with SHSU Students, Faculty, Staff, and resources.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide one-on-one coaching with undergraduate students who seek to improve their academic GPA. · Assess situational and academic needs to promote and provide action-oriented strategies for student-clients. · Provide summary reports, and make referrals where needed to guide students in seeking appropriate campus support. · Represent and support logistics of the Academic Success Center for initiatives including, but not limited to, Student Learning Orientations, Welcome Week, Classroom Visits, etc.

Non-essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs additional job-related duties and responsibilities as requested.

Work Hours, Environment:

  • In-person at the Academic Success Center in the Newton Gresham Library · Maximum: 17 hours per week · Some weekend and evening hours may be required.

Experiential Learning:

After an appropriate initial training period, the Recovery Coach will develop their skills through experiential learning, which includes: • Conducting individual one-on-one appointments with SHSU Students. Knowledge, Skills and Ability:

Ability to plan, implement, evaluate, and report activities conducted. · Ability to communicate effectively in writing and to prepare written and electronic documents. · Ability to communicate orally, both in person, by telephone, and virtually/online. · Ability to travel to meetings. · Ability to present oneself in an appropriately personable and professional manner to students and staff. · Ability to receive and utilize constructive feedback regarding performance, presentation, and relationships with others. · Ability to be both consistent and flexible as circumstances warrant. · Ability to communicate via computer email.

Other Requirements for the Position

Position will begin in Fall 2026

Minimum Qualifications:

This position is very high in student contact and requires an individual who demonstrates the following:

  • Currently enrolled at SHSU. Classification: Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Masters, Doctorate.
  • 2.0 GPA · Demonstrate growth mindset with the willingness to learn, execute and assess student academic needs. · Possess exceptional interpersonal communication skills and an ability to work effectively and collaboratively, especially with individuals from varying backgrounds. · Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to receive feedback from supervisor and colleagues. · Effective time management & self-starter qualities. · Willingness to commit to 15 weeks of fixed, consistent hours within the semester. · Computer Skills (familiarity with Office 365 applications, Zoom and Blackboard)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3.0 GPA · Interest in pursuing a career in education. · Additionally, applicants should have completed a FAFSA for the current academic term and will be reviewed for work study eligibility (preferred). · Knowledge of learning pedagogies · Bilingual skills
