Summary

The Work-Study student supports the Office of First-Generation Initiatives by helping promote programs, connect students to campus resources, and assist with outreach, events, and program coordination. This role offers hands-on experience in student support, marketing, event planning, research, and peer mentoring administration while learning more about first-generation student success at Mizzou.

Essential Functions

Tasks may vary from week to week, but generally include the following:

Marketing, Outreach, & Engagement

  • Create marketing and promotional materials for the Office of First-Generation Initiatives using approved branding, identity standards and approved communication platforms.
  • Assist with outreach efforts, including tabling at campus events to share information about first-generation programs and resources
  • Support the First-Gen Tigers Student Organization with engagement activities and events

Communication & Resource Support

  • Monitor and assist with the First-Generation Initiatives resource email account
  • Track and maintain an Excel log of frequently asked questions from students and family members, particularly related to first-generation status and scholarships
  • Learn about campus offices and resources in order to help connect first-generation students to appropriate support services

Scholarship Research & Updates

  • Research internal and external first-generation scholarships on an ongoing basis
  • Review scholarship links for accuracy and application availability
  • Post scholarships that are currently open for application to the MU Engage scholarship page

Directory & Website Support

  • Assist with updating the First-Gen directory in MU Engage by adding faculty and staff names and headshots
  • Ensure directory updates in MU Engage are reflected on the First-Generation website

Research & Program Benchmarking

  • Research other First-Gen Champion institutions using the SharePoint folder
  • Identify programs, initiatives, or best practices that Mizzou is not currently offering

Event Planning Support

The Work Study Student assists with planning and supporting First-Generation Initiatives events, including programs, workshops, mentoring events, and recognition activities.

Event related responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting with event planning timelines and logistics
  • Creating promotional materials for events
  • Helping prepare materials, sign in sheets, and communications
  • Supporting event setup, check in, and on-site coordination
  • Assisting with post event follow up and attendance tracking

Peer Mentor Program Support

The Work Study Student provides ongoing support for the First-Generation peer mentor program and assists with day-to-day program coordination under the guidance of professional staff.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting with mentor and mentee recruitment materials and outreach
  • Supporting communication with mentors and mentees (emails, reminders, and updates)
  • Helping maintain tracking spreadsheets for mentor mentee matching, participation, and engagement
  • Assisting with mentor training materials and program resources
  • Supporting mentor mentee events and scheduled check ins
  • Assisting with collecting feedback, reflections, and survey responses related to the program

Access & Tools Used

To be successful in this role, the Work Study Student will use:

  • Adobe Express - for creating marketing materials that follow university branding guidelines (office buys license)
  • First-Generation Initiatives email account - to help monitor and track incoming messages
  • Qualtrics - to access the faculty/staff "Get Connected" survey that routes responses to the First-Gen resource email account
  • MU Engage - to update the First-Gen directory and scholarship listings
  • SharePoint - to access research documents, timelines, and ongoing project materials

Anticipated Hiring Range

$15.25 per hour, paid on a bi-weekly basis.

Shift

  • Work-Study students typically work 2-3 days per week
  • Up to 20 hours per week, based on availability and office needs
  • Hours are scheduled around the student's class schedule
  • This position may require evening and weekend hours supporting activities and programs within the department. Occasionally division and campus projects may require additional hours outside of your normal schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible for a student title, an individual must be enrolled at the University of Missouri. Enrollment in the summer session is not required if the student was enrolled in the Spring semester and is pre-enrolled for the Fall semester. Selection is contingent upon results of a review with the Office of Institutional Equity, Office of Student Accountability & Support, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, previous MU appointment history, and reference checks.
