The ASB Assistant organizes the Alternative Spring Break (ASB) together with the Director of Student Leadership and Service Engagement in order to create an educational service-learning program focused on global citizenship and social justice education. Primary responsibilities include marketing, recruitment, research, planning, facilitation and execution of the ASB program.
Job Description
The Soka Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a co-curricular service-learning program that combines dialogue-based learning with volunteer service and advocacy in order to gain greater understanding of social justice concepts. Participants learn from one another's lived experiences and explore systemic issues while engaging with the communities that are most impacted by them. The Soka ASB cultivates social responsibility, leadership, and lifelong, active global citizenship whereby the community becomes a priority in an individual’s life decisions.
Responsibilities
- Effectively communicate and cultivate new relationships with potential service sites and community partners
- Plan, attend, and facilitate info meetings, educational workshops, debrief reflection meetings, and ASB banquet
- Plan, coordinate, and lead the logistics of a week-long ASB service trip (i.e. housing, transportation, service projects, etc.)
- Assist with program assessment and evaluation, procurement card reconciling, and general administrative paperwork as needed and manage ASB publicity and media (i.e. portal website, Sokannect, flyers, promo videos, etc.)
- Maintain inventory of ASB swag and supply inventory and stock items as needed
- Communicate regularly with participants regarding trainings, scheduling, and trip activity planning and promote a positive volunteer environment for all participants
- Attend leadership trainings to enhance professional competencies, especially in facilitation skills, to engage participants in dialogue-based learning based in mutual dignity and respect.
- Assist office with all other functions as assigned for the Office of Student Leadership and Service Engagement including but not limited to planning meetings, professional development sessions, team meetings and scheduled retreats.
Requirements
- Must be able to work a minimum of 6 hours per week including some weekends and commit to a standard work schedule every week
- Must be enrolled as a full-time student and in good standing with the university
- Must be available to work 20-40 hours and lead the ASB trip during the spring break period from Saturday, March 20, 2027 – Friday, March 26, 2027
- Passion for social justice and active citizenship and strong interest in engaging students in diving deeper into social issues
- Strong communication, administration, organizational, and facilitation skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently, accept individual responsibility for projects or assignments and meet multiple task deadlines
- Ability to effectively represent the Office of Student Leadership and Service Engagement to student organizations, campus departments, and community partners

The base salary range for this position is listed above. Compensation ranges are based on several factors including job function, experience and geographic location.
