Structural Steel Quality & NDT Inspector (AWS CWI)

What this role is about

Join our Structural Department as the quality gatekeeper for steel components that end up in demanding applications. As an AWS Certified Welding Inspector, you will lead visual inspections, validate welding practices, and perform NDT to ensure every shipment reflects our standards.

A day in the life

You start on the shop floor, moving methodically through finished pieces and conducting visual inspections on roughly 60% of outgoing product before shipment. With a practiced eye, you assess structural MIG/GMAW welds—paying particular attention to Complete Joint Penetration (CJP) joints. When safety-critical parts roll up, you switch gears to Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Magnetic Particle (MT), documenting results for seismic and load-bearing components.

Between inspections, you review engineering blueprints, fabrication drawings, and shop drawings, confirming each weld aligns with specifications, applicable drawings, WPS requirements, and internal quality criteria. You collaborate directly with welders, supervisors, and production teams to resolve nonconformances, reinforce best practices, and keep work moving without compromising quality.

Core responsibilities

• Execute and record visual weld inspections on approximately 60% of finished product prior to release.
• Evaluate structural MIG/GMAW welds with a strong emphasis on CJP quality.
• Perform and document UT and MT on seismic and load-bearing products.
• Interpret blueprints, weld symbols, engineering drawings, and shop drawings.
• Verify compliance with specifications, drawings, WPS, and quality standards.
• Identify weld discontinuities and partner with welders, supervisors, and production to correct issues.
• Ensure welding procedures and inspection requirements are followed consistently.
• Support production with guidance on welding quality and inspection criteria.

Qualifications

• AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)—required.
• Proven background inspecting structural steel welding.
• Hands-on experience with structural MIG/GMAW.
• Fluency in reading and interpreting blueprints, weld symbols, engineering drawings, and shop drawings.
