Join HTI as a Structural Steel Layout Fitter
Step into a role where precision meets purpose. At HTI, you’ll help transform digital drawings into large-scale structural assemblies that power major maritime manufacturing projects.
A day in the life
You start your shift reviewing digital blueprints and fabrication drawings. With layout tools and precision measuring instruments in hand, you mark, align, and prepare heavy steel. You fit components to spec, perform grinding, drilling, reaming, countersinking, deburring, and straightening, then tack (stick) weld parts to hold position. Before final weld-out, you double-check alignment, dimensions, and tolerances. Along the way, you conduct in-process quality inspections, collaborate with welders and other trades, and make any necessary repairs or rework to meet engineering standards—all while following strict safety and quality protocols.
What you’ll handle
- Lay out, fit, align, and assemble structural steel per engineering specifications
- Read and interpret digital blueprints, fabrication drawings, and work instructions
- Identify parts in electronic drawings and fit materials accurately to specification
- Use tape measures, layout tools, and precision measuring instruments for accurate setup
- Execute fitting operations: grinding, drilling, reaming, countersinking, deburring, straightening
- Tack (SMAW) weld components prior to final welding
- Verify alignment, dimensions, and tolerances and correct as needed
- Perform in-process quality checks and rework/repair to meet standards
- Operate fabrication tools safely; partner closely with welders and skilled trades
What you bring
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1–3 years of structural fitting experience (shipyard, marine, heavy fabrication, or industrial manufacturing preferred)
- Fluency with fabrication blueprints and digital/electronic drawing systems
- Strong understanding of structural layout, fit-up, and dimensional tolerances
- Solid construction math; skilled with tape measures and precision measuring tools
- Experience tack welding with stick (SMAW)
- Comfort using grinders, drills, and layout tools
- Mechanical aptitude and sharp attention to detail
- Ability to work safely in a fast-paced industrial environment
- Background in shipyard, vessel construction, or marine fabrication strongly preferred
