    A day in this role

Step onto the shop floor and turn raw stock into finished structural assemblies. Most of your day (about 70%) is hands-on fabrication—translating drawings into accurate layouts, fitting and squaring components, and keeping material moving safely through production. The remaining time (around 30%) is devoted to clean, code-quality FCAW welding that meets our internal standards and inspection protocols.

    What you’ll do

    Fabrication (70%)

    • Interpret shop drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols to create precise layouts.
    • Fit, square, align, and tack structural assemblies and miscellaneous items (handrails, stairs, ladders).
    • Prepare material by cutting, beveling, and shaping using horizontal bandsaws, ironworkers, plasma torches, and automated machinery (including drill lines or RoboRail).
    • Operate overhead bridge cranes and forklifts to stage and advance work efficiently and safely.
    • Troubleshoot basic issues with wire feeders and common shop tools to minimize downtime.

    Welding (30%)

    • Execute high-quality structural welds using Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW).
    • Manage heat input, travel speed, and puddle control to avoid warping, undercut, and porosity.
    • Verify completed welds meet company quality standards and pass required inspections.

    What you bring

    • Experience: Hands-on background in a structural steel or metal fabrication shop.
    • Welding: Strong FCAW proficiency; MIG (GMAW) or Stick (SMAW) experience is beneficial.
    • Layout & fit-up: Solid print reading and metal layout skills; handrail/stair layout experience is a plus.
    • Equipment: Familiarity with bridge cranes, forklifts, saws, and automated drill lines.
    • Work ethic: Team-first approach, reliable attendance, and commitment to shop safety.
    • Assessment: Ability to pass an on-site practical, hands-on weld and layout test.
