    Description

Structural Steel CWI & NDT Specialist

    A day in this role

You begin by reviewing the shipping queue, prioritizing assemblies that are ready to leave the floor. With your AWS CWI expertise, you complete visual examinations on roughly 60% of finished structural steel before it ships, confirming weld quality and workmanship. Next, you zero in on structural MIG/GMAW welds—especially Complete Joint Penetration (CJP) joints—verifying they meet applicable specifications, drawings, and WPS requirements.

As production advances, you perform UT (Ultrasonic Testing) and MT (Magnetic Particle) inspections on seismic and load‑bearing components to validate internal and surface integrity. You move seamlessly between engineering blueprints, fabrication drawings, and shop drawings, translating requirements into clear guidance for welders and supervisors. When defects appear, you help troubleshoot, coach corrective actions, and ensure procedures and inspection criteria are followed throughout the process.

    Key responsibilities

    • Conduct visual weld inspections on approximately 60% of product prior to shipment.
    • Examine structural MIG/GMAW welds with strong emphasis on CJP welds.
    • Carry out and document UT and MT inspections on seismic and load‑bearing products.
    • Review and interpret engineering blueprints, fabrication drawings, and shop drawings.
    • Verify conformance to specifications, drawings, WPS requirements, and quality standards.
    • Identify weld discontinuities; work directly with welders, supervisors, and production to resolve issues.
    • Ensure correct welding procedures and inspection requirements are consistently followed.
    • Support production with clear guidance on welding quality and inspection expectations.

    Qualifications

    • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) required.
    • Proven background inspecting structural steel welding.
    • Hands‑on experience with structural MIG/GMAW welding.
    • Ability to accurately read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, engineering drawings, and shop drawings.
